: Wheeling in Mass today...DAS BOOT!
Bertha the Cruiser 11-20-2004, 06:10 PM So the day got off to a rocky start when I gave out the wrong directions :shaking:
My group was running late...I had Grant (Endless Earth D90 on 35's...), George (2000 Disco II, and Dennis with his 1990 RRC. We were supposed to meet Bower and a few others on the way down and it didn't happen...so we were running late like I said.
Hit the trailhead about 1hour late and as I assumed, Roy, Dave, Mark, Todd, Chris etc were already on the trail...no worries, we were in no rush.
We run the first obstacle, each in our own way LOL and then we hit the hole...Grant waded through, locked on 35's in the D90...for some reason I though that since I had taken my Flintstones Vitamins this morning I could just wade through....hmmmmm...nope. I'm a moron. I hit the puddle like a special olympics hurdler.
Kerplunk.
I killed the engine as she slipped lower. My rear trailing ams had me caught on Log. Log was my enemy. Well Log and his friend H2O. They'd conspired to keep a bruthah down.
It worked. I filled my airbox with water but killed the engine in time as none even hit the MAF, never mind the plenum.
Once Winched out I used the Co2 tank to dry my wires and coil. Fired right up.
Dennis and George decided Log and Mr H2O were best avoided.
We motored onwards and had some fun until I scrambled a cv. It was then I decided to turn tail and head out before it got too dark. George followed me and now I am home :D
It was Great to see Roy, Todd Dave again and to meet Chris and Mark. All great folks. Maybe next time I will get my shizzle together and we'll all wheel at the same time LOL!

If I can flip this thing over backwards, that would really go well with the anchor imitation 45 minutes ago....
That's my story and I'm stickin to it....I'm sure the other will have their own versions...

SeaRover 11-20-2004, 06:19 PM that's a deep hole! good thing you killed the motor in time -
64rovr 11-20-2004, 06:27 PM that hole gas gotten several feet deeper in the past year or so... btw bumper looks good :flipoff2: i think that bumper is cursed... i was always breaking stuff and then as soon as you put it on your rig you start breaking stuff too... :D
Bertha the Cruiser 11-20-2004, 07:59 PM While I do like the RTE front bumper, it's not a replacement for a set of trim tabs....
Roverhound 11-21-2004, 08:24 AM Great pictures!
What's the set up on the d2?
Those aren't LR side steps are they?
Now I feel like taking the Hound and making a quick run today.
Bertha the Cruiser 11-21-2004, 09:10 AM That is actually my cousin's DII...2000.
When I was still running my old 4x4 biz we the OME springs and shocks on it, some 235/85 TrXus and some basic stuff. Now he has the steelies and the 265/75's...The Side steps are the now-defunct (I think) ARB side protection steps. although they have 2 spots that can hang you up a bit, they're excellent units. Not a slider per se, but definately better than a nerf or stock steps. The have saved this rig from some serious punishment.
you can see here that the two out riggers can hang you up where a true slider wouldn't. But again, they do their job well.

That sucks. I hate water. About 100K miles ago I did something like that on the disco, except I didn't kill the motor in time. It killed itself. I did get it running after about an hour and it has been fine ever since, but ever since then I have tried to go around stuff like that.

You need to empy those headlights before winter. Good for gauging off cambers, though...
xjweeble 11-21-2004, 02:43 PM What trail is that?
64rovr 11-21-2004, 03:06 PM MA-Bell, ancient powerline.
Wish I could have made it out, but I still haven't gotten back my RRC. We'll have to get another wheeling trip together soon. (I should have my truck back this week). :uk:
64rovr 11-21-2004, 03:27 PM Ditto on that... I think there are enough Rovers from PBB in this area that we could do a PBB-Rover Run. MA-Bell would be a great trail to do it on.

Yeah I'll be pulling them tomorrow and cleaning them out as well as installing new bulbs.
dmarch 11-22-2004, 07:50 AM I thought Tardis was down for the count... Good to see it resurrected.

I was shocked the {re} Tardis showed. Shocked.
He did well though..still connected with no CDL tho.

Well, it's looking like Winter Romp is the next larger scale event that will be local to all of us. I think we should try and organize somekind of a meeting at Bruce's, maybe on the Friday or the Monday, so we can be all hardcore by ourselves. I know I'll be in Maine, I might be driving the new car and not the rig, but I'll head down for sure come Feb.
I have managed to put the VW bus to sleep for the winter, fix up and sell the deezil, and fix up the "new" 4000S (studded hakka 2s, new brakes, align, front end, ready for snowboard duty), but I am going to wait and do the MC1 swap next summer. So now I have to get the big dumb truck done... It's getting mighty cold and it's not exactly fun to be out there crawling under the POS, but I need to finish this mess soon.
The main issue I am having is that a lot of people in Ontario are being refused insurance coverage point blank because they have "modified" vehicles. A K&N filter is considered a modification. So my rig is probably going to have to stay on 900R16s as that's the factory size for a 1 ton Land-Rover. It's going to be very hard to insure this thing.
As far as what I have left to do, I should have the beast running by thursday. After that I need to finish the exhaust, and finish up some tranny filler/shifter stuff. Then, driveshafts need to be redone (I ended up moving the axles a bit) and then I can finally say the driveline is done. The body still needs to be reassembled, and the brakes still need a lot of work (brackets/BCB front kit) so I think I can do it in the time I have available, however it's gonna be tight... I am hoping that Wromp will be my shakedown run. That actually was the case a few years ago, when I had finished the GhettoFord swap.
So start ragging on me... I need some motivation.

Welcome to my world (and all other people in Oz). So you are hoping they won't notice the spring over, engine, wider than stock track, etc, etc???
Is insurance in Ontario as bad as in Edmonton? I have a mate there and the stories he told me about premiums were almost unbelievable.

About the insurance, that sucks. I wonder if you wrote a letter to them stating that you were going to install seatbelts, disc brakes, better lights, and swaybars to your antique vehicle, but now due to their policies, you will not, I wonder what their response would be. Ask them if they will be liable for any accident you get in that would have been avoidable had you been able to stop sooner.
Freakin' insurance companies
dmarch 11-24-2004, 06:01 AM Is it not possible to have it inspected and appraised privately by someone accredited, to then send that documentation into insurance? We do that here when a truck is modified or converted (diesel). The nice thing is you can then insure it for almost any value you want. You just have to pay slightly more $$. But not too much.

I'm not concerned about value! Liability only is what I carry for my vehicles, from a monetary standpoint it makes no sense to insure them any other way. Carrying comprehensive coverage on my beat up ragged junk is kind of a waste.
It's liability. Ontario is pretty groundbreaking - They refuse to insure modified vehicles because they are a safety hazard, and in their opinion an uninsurable risk. Because of an explosion of streetracing and resultant skyrocketing claims and associated nightmares, modified vehicles are basically being cut out of existence as no one will insure them.
Basically, I'm in a good spot. Land-Rover 109s came from the factory with 900X16s, and a diesel engine was available. The axles look totally factory, as does everything else. I am going to declare it to the insurance companies as it is - a 1983 109 1 ton with a 6 cylinder diesel. Because it is an obscure vehicle, and because of its military origin, I don't imagine it will be refused coverage. All the mods I've done are pretty mild, I mean, 90% of the parts are stock. I'm not really concerned, but I think a 35" will be the max tire size I want to mess with for now.

They have a point. Would you really want just anyone making these upgrades to a vehicle? I mean, most people aren't capable of really understanding the implications. I just added a 1000 lbs engine to a 3400 lbs truck. That could cause some pretty seriously adverse handling. And my stability testing, braking testing, etc will be done by the seat of the pants on private roads. Scary. I'm glad not everyone and their brother is allowed to license and insure their 1987 YJ on 44s with 2 foot lift blocks.
dmarch 11-24-2004, 10:15 AM Always pimpin a brothas' ride RJ... :grinpimp:
I hear you on the insurance front. Not just on value but liability too. That's interesting though about Ontario. And your right about vehicle mods and the potential for disaster. I'm surprised it hasn't come to that here.
But damn, even on a 109!
H2O-hs 11-24-2004, 06:38 PM 64Rovr..Thanks for letting everyone know about one of the few trails left open in MA. Maybe now, another 200 trucks will show up and help close this one a little faster too. Just like Vietnam, Beacon, etc... etc......
Can you please edit that out?????? :shaking:
64rovr 11-24-2004, 07:28 PM Yeah Allan, because saying its "MaBell" really gives out info about its location
Bertha the Cruiser 11-24-2004, 07:30 PM H2ohs...while not cool to put trail names in posts, I think if you just concentrated on the CTjeep.org guys you could cut down that trails usage by half, if not more. :D

Try typing the trail name and MA in google. You'll be amazed how fast you find the town that the trail is in. I am sure if someone needed a place to wheel, they could figure out the rest.
You seem not to care about things like that anyway. Remember this past April, you were foolish enough to sink your truck in an illegal wheeling place also in MA.
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=239596
Maybe you'll grow up some day and realise that you are part of the problem with trails getting closed in MA. Posting trails on PBB's and wheeling in illegal places just is'nt smart.

I admit it's not smart? No, I know it's not and didn't post it to begin with. :)
CTjeep.org...they have guys wheeling there all the time...more than the YT guys in fact ;)
