: Jeep Truck dana 60 swap-????'s
RSQJEEP 02-06-2002, 05:33 AM Anyone swap a Jeep truck dana 60-2 (35 spline, semi-floating, 5 on 5 1/2" rear) into a Jeep?
I read here that it is 65.5" wide. Does anyone know if the pinion is centered or offset (I'm running the 231 Transfer case)? I know the pinion is offset because of the t-case, but will it be too much of an offset for my 231 t-case?
Are the brakes 12" drums? I read a couple of places that you have to run 16" rims....can you run 15" rims instead?
I'm going to be swapping this axle into my 1990 YJ. Any advice? I know that I'm going to have to cut off the spring perches and shocks and reweld them...
Should I go through the trouble of cutting it down or run it full size?
Anyone have pix of a full size Dana 60 axle installed?
How hard it is to get parts for?
Thanks

looks like you answered your own question (albeit incorrectly).
the rear should not be offset, the 69-73 D60-2 was hooked up to a Dana 20 xcase, which does not have an offset output.
parts availability? hmmm.... lemme think here, does Dana/Spicer have a decent aftermarket?
RSQJEEP 02-06-2002, 02:54 PM I read in another post that A guy was having a hard time finding brake parts for that old of a truck~ hence the question about part availability.
I also read that the 60-2 was hooked to the q-track t-case...
"you have a Dana 60 that ran off a rig with a quadratrac and is offset quite a bit to the passenger side. That's what the 2 means in Dana 60-2."
The part that I want to know about is if I will have vibes from the pinion on the 60 not lining up with the NP231 t-case shaft...
DieselYJ 02-07-2002, 07:12 AM There are 2 different axles made ( i have one of each). One is offset about 9" and the other is only offset about 3". I am also in the process of installing the one with the 3" offset in my YJ. What i am going to try and do is shift the t/c over a bit to help it line up.
I am using a fixed yoke 205 so there sure will not be vibrations,
so if i were you i would definately switch your 231 to fixed yoke.
AS for brakes i will be switching it over to discs so parts or rims will not be a problem.
RSQJEEP 02-07-2002, 07:24 AM I do have the JB Conversion SYE kit with a Tom Wood's rear CV driveshaft.
Is the axle with the 3" offset the Dana 60-2? How are you going to shift the t-case over? What Chevy disc brake set up are you going to use? That is a great idea!
Let me know how it goes....I'm still trying to decide if I should try and make the 60 fit or go for the almost bolt-in Dana 44. I need to do asap, my rear is twisted.
Thanks for you help
DieselYJ 02-07-2002, 07:29 AM Because i have to make up the rear crossmember anywise, i figured i would just mount it a inch or 2 to the offset side. I dont forsee any problems with this idea, but who knows?
I am planning on cutting the existing backing plates to hold the calipers and use the caddie calipers and ford 1/2 ton discs.
I plan on doing this around the first of April, so i will let you know how it goes.
Scout Dude 02-07-2002, 10:42 AM Remember...a driveshaft doesn't know if it's sideways or up and down...it's the overall angle that matters. I had a model 18 t-case in my Scout with a centered 44 rear. (some of them come that way!) It ran fine with no vibrations. I don't think that you should worry about a 3" difference.
WillyPete 02-07-2002, 06:26 PM unless that 60-2 was a carryover from 72, it will not be offset for quadratrac.
the 60-2 is a 35 spline, semi float axle. that's what the 2 means. the 60-3 is a 30 spline full float, hence the 3. drum brake parts shouldn't be too hard to find (or bolt on). it's a Dana axle, after all.
the semi float 60 was used 67-72, the full float 60 was used from 73-88. before the SF 60, jeep used a Dana 53... i could go on and on, but i don't think i need to...
ozarkjeep 02-07-2002, 07:16 PM look for JeepGod on the ORC, shortwheelbase bbs
he has a early 70s Jeep truck Dana60, 5 on 5.5 in the rear of his CJ full width, he had a hard time finding brakes and bearings and such, from what he said at least.
I'm in the midst of a D60-2 narrowing project for my son, Matt [C104 on this list]. Here's what I know: I bought a donor '73 Jeep J4000 [actually the J4700 package] with the illusive 5 on 5.5", 35 spline D60-2, semi floating axle, with 4.10 open diff. This truck had the 360/T18a/D20/D44 closed knuckle front/D60 semi float rr. The output for the pinion was NOT centered, even with the D20 t. case. [With the very long driveshaft I don't think it mattered, it just had to miss the oversized gas tank that hung under there.]
I had ithe housing shortened by Cook's Machine Works in L.A. They cut down the long side 5-3/8" which centered the front pinion output on the axle. It's now about the width of a stock Scout II or Waggie rr axle. They cut the tube at about 8" in on the long side, tapered down to the cuts, splined them, and slipped in a hardened tube on the inside of the axle tube, and welded the whole mess together in a special jig. He said he's never seen one break even on drag strip cars with huge hp. The long side axle shaft was shortened likewise, resplined and rehardened. The long side axle shaft is about 1" longer still than the short side to center the pinion. These 35 spliners are huge. They neck UP after the splines!
I bought a full Detroit, a complete pig bearing/seal rebuild kit and we will reuse the 4.10 gears. Now it gets interesting. The usual price for a bearing for a 60-3 (full floating) is about $15. The bearing, ONE EACH for the outer axle ends for the 60-2 are $128.99, EACH! Choke/ wheeze! We found some on-line for $50 ea. and I should see them any day now. The brakes are wierd. The outer dimention of the drums are 13", which just barely clears the inside of a 15" wheel.
The shoes/drums look very good so I haven't run into any brake parts problem yet. The J4000 has the same size brakes/drums front and rear. They are rather narrow compared to the f.f. brakes, but large of diameter. We should have the axle up and running in the next few weeks.
I also stripped the front 4.09 D44 gears/RG&P/carrier/bearings from the front axle for Matt's rig (which had 3:73'"s)
I'll let you know how it turns out. I already have a shortened D60-2 on my CJ8 and it looks identical to the one we're building [except the 4.88's, ARB, and disc brakes].
regards, as always, jefe
