I looked at a 78 3/4 ton chevy truck last night. Motor ran great, but the tranny or t-case was making a clicking noise when in park. If you dropped it in gear and pulled away it would stop.
The guy was saying that it was because of the NP203 t-case and that the chain was sloppy in there. I plan on dropping in a 205 that I already have. But I was wondering if this is a common problem.......and more importantly if that sound could come from the tranny.
For the price, the motor and axles are well worth it but I want the whole thing. :D:D:D

I had a rolled pawl in a 727 torqueflite that made a clicking noise as you describe.

That noise could't have been in the transfer case if you were in park. Nothing is spinning in the t-case when the truck is in PARK.

That is most likely the case.
Mine made a noise like that when the thrust washer on the starter was rubbing against the flexplate.

It could be the pump in the trans making that noise. I had a Buick derby car with a TH400 do the same thing when I bought it. Clicking would stop when I put it in gear.
It turned out that the trans fluid was dirty and the filter was clogged = pump was getting very little fluid to it. Lucky for me things went back to normal when I changed the trans fluid and filter.
If the pump is making the noise - worst case it that the pump is going bad or that the trans needs a rebuild because the guy let the trans fluid get dirty enough to cause this.
Just wanted to throw this in there so that you wouldn't underestimate the potential problem. I hope it's the flexplate bolts. ;)

My trans rattles in park also.At first I thought it was my cat converter coming apart. Its been doing it for 8 years and theres no excessive metal in the pan so I aint too worried about it.

definetly sounds like loose converter bolts to me. pretty common problem. if they are loose, pull them out and put a dab of blue loctite on them; problem solved. sometimes the bolts holding the flexplate to the crank come loose, but you'd have to pull the trans to fix that.
i seriously doubt that the noise is coming from the pump; it would have chewed itself to bits by now and would not stop when the vehicle starts to go either direction; you'd also find a boatload of metal in the trans pan.
for sure not coming from the t-case. when the trans is in park the park pawl (a small rod) locks the rear output shaft in place, so the t-case input gear is definetly not moving.
