SSSRodeo 11-24-2004, 07:38 PM YeaI hear you Poley.
I'm about to start on my new shop too, but can't get the ground work started due to all the rain we've gotten here in North Central Texas. The backyard is like a wet sponge. I was hopeing to have the shop up before Chistmas but it doesn't look good. I hope my Contractor likes to work in cold weather or I'm really going to be pissed.
With any luck it'll be finished by Spring.
Been planning and saving for this shop for 7 years.
Post up some pics when you get it going.

SSSRodeo 11-25-2004, 05:55 AM pound salt, it rans alomst every day here you guy suck, can I live with you?
Sure, Come on down... But don't forget if you come, your gonna have to stay thru Summer. It last 8 months here. You do have Air Conditioning don't you? It's almost a necessity here, even in a trail rig.
You'd like it here. We have 1month of Winter of which about three days of that is 1 inch of snow or less. 2 months of Spring, and 8 months of Summer of which 2 months of that is normally about over 100 degrees and then followed by 1 month of Fall. Then we start the whole thing over again.
Nice thing is you can ride a motorcycle almost all year round here.
If you do come, remember our trees are only 10 feet tall here, and the ocean is a hard days drive from my house. But the wind blows here every day.
I've lived in the Deserts of New Mexico and the California Mojave, so Arizona is gonna be close to us weather wise. But, expect them to have a shorter Winter.
You can even drive to Moab in one day from here.
It's 1036 miles from my driveway to MCD's on Main St., Moab.
I have a servants/ house keepers apartment above the garage that is empty right now. I did put my GYM up there, but we can move it, once the shop is built. Just land on the runway behind the house. Honest!
Everyone wishes they were somewhere else. Me, I wish I was in Tahiti.

Happy Turkey Day! Gotta go kill the bird!!!!!!
Poley 11-25-2004, 09:00 PM WOOO!!!! contractor what is that I'nm doing it myself....
I've been saving for 3 years, and it was going to be a metal pre-fab but with the price of steel it is going to be block:) and I am happy about that, because now block has gone down enough for me to GET'RRR DONE.....
WILL POST LINKS TO PIX, I can't post pix yet no red star... :shaking:
and come on down to the AZ and spend it in 115 and tell me about it..... I can handle the heat, can you stay in the kitchen???? :flipoff2:
SSSRodeo 11-26-2004, 07:59 AM Well 1200 square Feet with beams for cinder block walls is going to be a lot of mud to push. I'm assuming you are going to get the free buddy help with that. What are you going to use for rafters? Wood or Steel? And with a 11 ft ceiling I guess that means a full height lift will be out.
iMy little ol shop is going to need a professional to pour and erect the metal. I have a little problem with vertigo, so I have to be careful when working hard. Job related heat stroke a few years back.
Let's hope the weather clears for both of us soon.

Poley 11-28-2004, 12:02 PM WEll the weather was great for three days, thrur, fri, and Sat three days that they were closed for thanksgiving... and now that I'm planning to pour Monday the weather is going to shit again....:(
I'm CURSED...oh well it will get done soon..... Just a little pissed off right now
SSSRodeo 11-28-2004, 12:46 PM I hear ya! I've been trying to entertain myself by building my Granddaughters a tube chassis pickup style go kart.Err sort of. It hasn't rained here either! But, the damn wind is blowing 60 mph. And kinda cool so two shirts are required, as it will suck the body heat away quick. I'm so crammed in my garage I have my tubing bender lag bolted to the trailer floor outside.
Hopefully it'll dry out here this week and we can get the forms up. It's like walking on a sponge now. Won't take much to break through the grass and make a huge mess. In which case the S.O. will go ballistic. She's been a bear to live with since Turkey Day. Wish I knew what was up with her. Take my advice,,, Don't marry an Italian....Talk about a Temper..... And moody as hell. Shit!
Well, gotta get the front axle welded in, now that I finally got it lined up.

basketcasejeep 11-30-2004, 08:04 AM Cool, how thick is your slab? We had ours poured- 60x80x16. Its about 8" thick. Putting up the steel ourselves. This is a bugger.
Poley 11-30-2004, 09:36 AM slab is 4" 300psi w/ fibers, also the building is going to be cinder block.
What a bitch to move all that mud... wish the shouts were longer on those trucks.. glad it is done Slab for mud was $1625 @ 24 cu. yrds.
how about some pics to go along with the build up thread.
sounds like a sweet set up
basketcasejeep 11-30-2004, 10:33 AM slab is 4" 300psi w/ fibers
I think you mean 3000 psi? I can't remember what we used in ours... either 3000 or 3500 w/ fibers and rebar on 5' centers. Its my dad's shop, we'll be sharing it. He is big on overkill...
Camo, he posted a link to the pics in post 11...
I'll try to get some pics of mine together soon but I need to get off my butt and get a red star :(
sfrans 12-01-2004, 01:16 PM I'm up here with Dirtytoy where it rains a lot. A couple years ago we had over 180 days straight with rain. This is my project garage. 1500 sq ft. So far the brick work on the front is the only thing that I haven't. All the rest has been by me and a couple of friends. Started it in July. Mine too has been a 3 year saving project. Paying for it as I go. If I had paid to have it all done it would be more than double the cost and I couldn't have afforded it. Got my electrical permit today. http://home.comcast.net/~skipfrans
Poley 12-01-2004, 11:32 PM Sfrans.. that is a sweet set up you have their. like I said mine is going to be just the gray cinder block for now I hope to stain it or stucco it in a year or so.. but it will do for now..
TheRipper 12-03-2004, 06:43 PM Fixing to pour mine but I am putting my rebar on 2 foot centers.I am to cheap to put them at 1 foot centers..lol..The cool thing is I drive a cement mixer truck for a living.Just for all the people who has not poured there slabs yet.The fiber is not worth it.It is all hype honestly. If you want to really make it stronger order the 4500 psi mix.And watch the people and make sure they do not wet it past a 6 sump.I see so many contractors pouring shop slabs at a 7 plus slump because they are to lazy to drag it across...lol..that is what you get when you let a whiteman pour your concrete though.I am not racial I am also white but know the truth. It looks good though.
sfrans 12-03-2004, 11:28 PM thanks for the complement Poley. You build with local materials. Up here in Washington it's mostly wood. The fun part was learning how to put on the spanish style roof.
Ripper I went with a 6" slab reinforced with 4" screen and rebar every 2 feet. It's 8" under the motorhome treads and 8" with rebar every 6" where I plan to floor mount a tubing bender. It started as 5 slump, bumped to 6 do to the heat. I did all the drag work. I'm willing to put a little more effort into it so it's right the first time. I've been planning it for about 20 years. Kids are grown and gone, sooo it's time for our toys. I do have to sacrifice 1/2 of a bay in the house to a ceramics shop for the wife. The rest will make a nice garage for her trike and my bike though.
TheRipper 12-06-2004, 09:28 PM That is sweet I thought you were talking about the fiber mix they put in the concrete now to make it stronger..lol..it sounds stout and thick.
bron86co 12-06-2004, 09:32 PM can't wait to see those pics :D
