I've got 38.5x14.5 SXs on beadlocks and don't want a friggin huge spare hanging off the back.

So...should I get a 38x11 bogger for a spare or just bring a tube?

I've got beadlocks so I'm not going to be popping tires off the bead and the sidewalls are pretty tough on these tires so getting flats won't be as common as it was with my previous radials.

Whaddaya think?

I am kind of new here so I don't want to step on any toes here put I have run into this post a few times before
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=19080&highlight=spare+tire+and+TSL (or you can search for spare tire and TSL and it comes up)
and it pretty much says it is unnecessary. I am looking at the same tire and I am not even considering ordering a spare. I'll leave one back at the trailer.

Not to steal your post but I was wondering if you could measure those 38.50's. height mounted on the rim? rim width? how wide the tread is? and do they look 'rounded' like some have said in the past? Like I said I have my tire choice narrowed down to this 38 and the 39.5X15 non SX TSL.

Hope this helps and thanks in advance.

Justin

I measured them about a month ago (while off the vehicle) and I think they were 38" tall and 14" wide but I'd have to double check this. I am quite sure they this measurement or 1/2" wider and taller.

Mine are on 10" champion beadlocked aluminum wheels and off the vehicle they do look rounded (the tread in the middle appears to stick out farther than the shoulder tread).

I have a spare with my 38.5x14.5's but realistically with beadlocks, I would think just a tube would be adequate. More than likely I will not carry the spare except for events I participate in that require a full sized spare.

38.3 tall
almost 13" (questimate) contact width at 35 psi on 10" wheels, 1/4 of 4,680 lbs.

i had to do mine for a friend today
38.5x14.5x15 on a 15x10 rim with 20 PSI in it on my Bronco was 37 inches tall (only about 40 miles on teh tire too)

Lots of plugs and glue and onboard air and you should be fine.

Thanks for the input. :)
The other post on "40" spare or not" is large enough I don't want to even open it up:(

I do have onboard air (high output York). I think I'll go find a really good plug kit, a tube, and maybe some of the super heavy duty sewing kits that some guys on here were talking about (they would stitch back up a huge side wall rip them put in a tube to get it home).

I like that idea Dave. I think I will do that as well(copycating) WHere would you find a tube that big? And would you need to change over to bolt in valve stems? So the ones are easily removed for the tube to fit through?I wish I could find something like that for the 36s on the 5 right now. I am tired of carrying that 110 pound spare around all the time. I wonder if it affects the COG very much?

the heavy duty sewing kit you are refering to is simply a pair of needle nose pliers and bailing wire. I just want to know what size tube everyone is running

I run a 38.5X14.5 SX spare, then again I think a spare is needed I run in the back of my YJ tub, I used two pieces of square stock "1x1" with a steel plate welded to them going across my rear wheel wells I lay the tire on that and use a wing nut setup to hold the tire in place.. The spare is out of my way I can store stuff under it and I dont have to have a big ass tire hanging from my tail gate..

sure is easier and faster to swap on the spare and keep wheelin:) I carry plugs too, for small repairs.

are there any really narrow tire and rim combos that roughly aproximates the overall diameter of the rest of your tires-but is way lighter than a 5th identical tire and rim? this way, at least you would actually have a "mega emergency" spare in case you say.....crack a rim or shred a sidewall past the point of no return in a place where you can't just "set up shop" and start sewing sidewalls.....
