I want to put in stronger axles in my 89' heap. I would also like them to be as bolt in as possible. I'm not sure if the 8.8 or the d44 is stronger. can I still do upgrades to the axles and such on the 8.8? thanks for the input.
Here, since it was too hard for you to hit the "search" key and type in "8.8" I did it for you. Now go have fun newbie. :flipoff2:

I would go with an 8.8. I have one in my rig and I love it. Never have had one problem so far :D there really stout axles if you get the 31 spline exploder one, plus they have disc brakes. I also know there axle strength is stronger than Dana 44's. I cant remember the specifics but the 8.8 can handle about 1,500 pounds of pressure before axle breakage compared to the Dana 44. If H8 see's this post he might give you the specifics, Im pretty sure he knows them. I believe the 8.8 can handle about 5500lbs. before breaking and the D44 handles about 4000lbs. before breakage. Id go 8.8 :D

Im tired of driving up the cost of 31 spline 8.8s, everytime I need one for a build up. So I am now advocating using a D44.
Or the newbies can do a search. :D

I got lucky and found a 96, in Yucaipa, for $300, minus calipers. But in good shape.
I bought my last one on my rig(95) for $360 complete, about 3 1/2 years ago. I bought one(96) for about $300 the year before that. Now they regularly sell for $500 and up, if you can find the 95 or newer disc brake version.

Ya, if you get the 31 spline and they got discs on'em already, i think that would be the better choice
