: What axle in an F750 dump truck (and decoding other moronspeek from the want ads)

There's a 1975 F-750 Dump truck in the local paper - is this likely to just have one of those huge round 2 speed rear ends - or might it be worth eyeballing?

I know - the answer you want to give is....call and ask for crying out loud!

let me explain - the type of folks that advertise the kind of cheap and HD stuff i care about, in the kind of free paper I look in, are...ummm...how do you say illiterate inbreds without coming off elitest? Anyway...you get the picture.

Which leads me to also ask......is there any other place on this godforsaken planet where every hick insists on referring to both the front and rear axles as "rear ends"? It drives me nuts. If I call and ask "What front axle is in that?" the morons will think I'm talking about just the shaft. You have to say "what kind of front rear end is in that" I'm not kiding....morons!

There are also 2 79 F250's - I know the 78-79 f250 with the snofighter package had a RRD60. the question is, how do I ask the banjo player what he's got? If I say "snofighter package" I'll no doubt get "ugggh...yea, I gots a plow on it". And I am not going to go through "Is that a Reverse cut dana 60 front rear end in that".....tooooo painful?

So, is there any moron proof way to tell the f250 snofighter pkg from non...like (as if it would be this easy) the regular 250 has coils and the snofighter leaves? Wishful thinking....

HELP ME !!! (and don't ever move here!)

you could ask if it has king pins or ball joints. im nt sure but are the king pin d60s have external hubs or internal?

Bill, no worries on me moving to Canada, i like my firearms too much!

About that front -rear end, my buddy has a '78 F-250 with an extra cab "Camper Special" and it has a RC 60. Maybe that's a good starting point? I mean any idiot knows if he's got an extra cab, right? Then the leaf spring question, and then maybe have him measure the hubs?

I envision something like "Oh you betcha, the hubs are big like."

(This only works if Ford steering arms mount like Chevy/Dodge, I think they do).

One question I have found to be useful when talking to idiots over the phone, etc, is to ask them how many bolts hold the steering arm to the axle. 3, more or less in a row, and its a 44 (or a 10 bolt Chevy). 4, in a rectangle, and its a king pin 60.

Forget the F 750. It should be a big Eaton 2 speed. That's too much even for me and I overkill everything.:)

Thanks for the tips so far lads...the ball joint / king pin thing might work..

Seriously...I once drove miles to look at a new -- gasp -- front rearend for my old Bronco...only to find a fawking broncoII up on milk crates with the front axle half hangin off.

Then these two toothless wonders with the characteristiclt small features of the inbred tried to get indimidating when i didn;t want it since they'd "spent so long pulling it apart after i called".

I wa so pissed I nearly choked their pitbull and beat them to death with it!

Got to brave it tho - add reads "79 F-250 4x4 with plow gear, for parts or off-road use only. Exc drive train. $1200 Ketch Harbour"

That's like $25 US !!!

There's another real gem...78 chev 1/2 ton (that's another thing - it is apparently the hight of uncool to pronounce the Y) 7" suspension lift. 3" body lift, 33" tires...

Hooo-eeee - that should be cool

I'll back up that idea about asking if there's 3 or 4 bolts holding the steering arm on the knuckle, I'd never even thought of that one, but it has to be the easiest, & most idiot proof way.

afecko: Supercabs do not mean D60, it's based on either the snowplow package (Sno fighter) or just a high GVWR option. In 79, odds are a F250 will be a D44, since most D60 equipped trucks in 79 were badged F350s. 1978 is the random year. Ford did not build a 4wd F350 in 78, & this is why they randomly pop up in high GVWR F250s.

I've yet to find a way to get around having to go out and look for myself. I quit trusting what people said on the phone long time ago.

Here's another idea for 'them guys' to idetify a Dana 60 front for you. Ask them to count the number of bolts holding the diff cover on. I don't know how many a Dana 44 or Dana 60 has but maybe someone will chime in with that info.

44 and 60 have the same number of bolts in the cover.

The 3 vs. 4 bolt thing doesn't work on a Ford. Ford did have a better idea here. They didn't use the "C" arm and for / aft drag link like chevY or Dodge. They had a "cross over" drag link.

But that can work tou youe advantage Bill. By the sounds of it you're not going to get anywhere with the ball joint vs. king pin debate. Put it like this:

"That there front reareand have one big honkin' nut by the brake stoppin thingy, or it got 4 liter uns?"

Bob - thas' exactly what i went with. Buddy told me "Four - I done jus' put 2 new axles in it last year, so I nows it's 4"

(I didn't ask him if he put 2 new shafts in or 2 new front and rear rearends, or somehow maybe 2 new rear rearends and make a 6x6!!)

So - I drove an hour - found a regular old F250 with HD RRD44 and D60 rear...but with a HUGE blade and the hydraulic plow gear robbed from an excavater.

I was at once so pissed off / impressed by the blade, i bought the POS anyway....without even driving it!

I am a comlete moron - see other thread (what have i done)

That is so funny, had the same thing happen to me last week in good ol WV, I was calling it a front axle and he was saying to his buddy go pull the rear end, and I said no, I want the front axle :D

Actually, on the leaf spring trucks (F350, F250, & F150 supercabs) they still ran the push/pull setup... crossover was coil spring only (77.5-79)
