The AOD can be beefed up to be a decent trans. You can swap to the E4OD, a bit stronger but will also require a different computer. You can always swap to a manual or you can loose your overdrive and gain gobs of brute strength and go with a C6

90 has the push button O/D so it is a E4OD, My 89 has a AOD. You could put a heavy duty rebuild kit in it or swap it for a C6 or a manual, but you will have to get a computer from a f150 or bronco that had the same motor with a c6/AOD/manual tranny.
It won't be a e40d, it would be an AOD-E. E4OD is the heavy duty trans, having push button OD only signafies that it is electronically controlled.

That's incorrect. The AOD was offered behind the 302 in 1990. The 351W got the E4OD. Lots of little ways to determine one or the other... most conclusive is to look at the pan.

AOD is basically square with a slight taper on two corners at one end. Fourteen bolts. The E4OD is 20 bolts, more rectangular with one corner notched out. Google can find you photos of the different pan gaskets.

Ok just my thoughts seeing as i own/owned two 79s a 91 and 96 Bronco. AODs are cheap and plentiful where i am located i'm not sure if this is the case for you. I'm not sure how much it costs to get rebuilt or if you are going to do it yourself but since i didn't rebuild the E4OD that blew up in my 91 bronco it cost me about 1500.00 since it was a "electronic heavy duty transmission" *whatever*. C-6s are strong right out of the box, and if built well and coupled with a good transmission cooler will deal with any punishment you throw at it, it is also the most inefficient automatic transmission i have come across, you will probably notice a loss of gas mileage (this may or may not be a concern) and probably a loss of power being eaten up by it. Its still a great tranny though, plentiful, and cheap to rebuild. There are some really nice manual trannys out there too. Good Luck

The c6 was available behind big blocks, M blocks, FE's, small blocks.. The only engines it wasn't available behind was due to the fact it hadn't been invented yet..

But it is pretty much the only trans ford ever put out that would live with a big block (at least a stock/mild one) without too many issues.

The truck has 20 bolts holding the pan,ok,a friend of mine has a 429 with a c-6 on it,think its a simple swap?

I'd say just rebuild it with as many heavy duty parts as possible. I've rebuilt one it was the only automatic i've done to date, but it really wasn't too bad. Just follow the directions on the FSM.
