: Distributor pitting and scorching

Hi all,

Sorry if this is a bit newbie, but I haven't worked on a gas engine for a long time (much prefer diesels).

So - I was under the impression that pitting and scorching of the terminals and rotor in a distributor was caused by a bad condenser - since it was not able to take the sharp peaks out of the power - and I always changed the condensor on my IIA with every 2nd set of points and never had a pitting problem.

So what causes this problem on an electronic ignition system, since they seem to have no condensor?

Bad coil? Condensation?

I dunno what vehicle you're referring to, nor do I know the first thing about Series vehicles..

but sometimes really bad pitting is cuz of worn contacts or the point gap is incorrectly adjusted.. but usually i'd say, off the cuff here, that it's from excessive moisture in the distributor cap. Sometimes just taking the cap and rotor off and cleaning them real good, then spraying them down with some sort of lubricant, silicon or something, add a little barrier.. just a thought

do you think you're getting bad spark?

Last week i replaced my Dads County distributer cap and rotor button from this very same problem (corrosion) as it was only firing on 6 cyclinders.

The car ended up being towed home as it was a PITA to drive but i managed to pop 2 tyres within 1/2 an hour, so i was going no where anyway - (free tow - thanks RACV!)

So i should be looking to replace the condenser to stop this reoccuring?

Dave.
