: Anyone ever stuffed there ride into a moving truck??
Skyetone 02-06-2002, 09:11 PM No seriosly...This is the poor white trash board. I have a toy. I think it would fit into a huge ass u-haul and drive to colorado when I move. I haven't figured out if the floor would take that weight. I think it would cuz I moved pallets of paper in em (1000 lbs each) and just stuff. i figure needing to build some big ass ramps but then it would be easy form there. just back it in and go. My swampers would be happy :D I now see the point in stock short axles :D lets see you fullwidth guys do this. :D
ranger 02-06-2002, 09:24 PM Make life easier and rent a trailer, or you could invest in one for future extreme truck mods! Depending on the reason for your move, you can use the expense as a tax writeoff......:skull:
Skyetone 02-06-2002, 09:43 PM How much does U-haul charge for a trailer to tow behind there truck. Key word is there truck... I don't have a fullsize..
paniolo 02-06-2002, 09:53 PM Friend of mine rented a U-haul truck and trailer to get his rig home when his R&P blew. He did a one way from OK to Central TX...about 400 miles. I think it was around $300 total ... call U-haul, they probably know :p
4x4realm 02-06-2002, 10:13 PM I knew a guy who put a c j in the back of a u haul truck.
YellowSub1962 02-06-2002, 10:51 PM get ahold of SnortClown, Neckster, or any of the other Snort guys that drove to the hammers from Washington with their junk in the back of a U-haul....
:usa:
I paid $150 for 3 days last time for the trailer
liveaxle 02-07-2002, 01:02 AM Skytone, I loaded up my extra-cab Toy into the second biggest U-haul truck that U-haul rents. When I parked the truck inside untill it was touching I still had a foot or two of bed sticking out outside of the U-haul. So get the biggest truck that U-haul rents. Also, there isn't a good way to secure the truck inside the U-haul and the floors are slick aluminum. I don't think its the best way to move a truck but it can work.
Shaker 02-07-2002, 05:16 AM I have put my 72 FJ40 in the back of a U-Haul and drove it to TENN. to the Great Smoky Mountain Trail Ride....2x10 OAK work good as ramps when braced with 2 in. angle.....Hint...Hint;) :D
1TONTJ 02-07-2002, 05:19 AM So how do you guys secure the trucks to the floor?
Hit something with an unsecured truck in the back and you are pancaked...
Phil
gunracer1 02-07-2002, 05:44 AM i have shoved a 67 camero with a big block in the back of a 24 ft. u haul. and a 74 nova in the back of a 24' ryder truck. they both had wood floors so we screwed some blocks to the floor for hold downs and took off. this was from va. beach to east texas both times. i have a 24' wells cargo trailer that is the same width as one of the big rental trucks we bolted in some tie downs and took off. i can fit a fj62 backed in and a zuk if i drive it up on the hood of the cruiser right to the point of touching the 8' roof of the trailer. we hauled them 1800 miles this summer to colorado and moab. mike
JEEP_TJ_FREAK 02-07-2002, 06:27 AM Mine has been in the back of a dump truck.

good point.
i don't think they did. but you could put a strap around the bumper.
Cutter 02-07-2002, 07:13 AM screw u-haul....go with ryder (they have much better trailers, too) and u-haul has some kind of 30" tire limit on there trailers. I used a u-haul to go from here in texas to west verginia to wheel and that trailer was a POS and I had to tell em I had little tires on my rig and use my own straps.
1TONTJ 02-07-2002, 07:14 AM Think I could safely transport two built Jeeps in a 24' 4 ton truck?
This might be nice for going from Ottawa to Tellico...
I would need to tie them down safely though, or they might get irritated with me at the border crossing.
Thanks,
Phil
RockRover 02-07-2002, 07:45 AM I'm sure U-Haul would have a huge problem with moving a vehicle that way...Shiat, they seem to have a problem with someone moving anything. Hell, I couldn't even get my D90 on a U-haul trailer...First they couldn't tell the difference between a D90 and a Range Rover...They told me that my 90 weighed in at 4200lbs...I told them that it weighs 3200lbs and I could prove it via' my registration. Nope. Then during the SAME conversation I said "Oh...Yea...I, uh, need to move my VW bug too!". She said fine, but what vehicle am I towing it with? I told her that it was a 91' Toy 4 Runner...I could hear "click, click, click" on her computer, and then the answer came..."Nope...You don't have the proper rating to haul 2100lbs". I hung up at that point.
Later that year I bought a 2500 Sub and trailer…Much less hassle.

TLCObsession 02-07-2002, 08:13 AM When I moved up to WA, I had my FJ-40 inside a 24ft Ryder, with 4x4 blocks lagged into the floor in front and behind each tire. I also had enough stuff (visualize a 1 BR appartment) to live with until the house in CA sold. I used 2 sheets of plywood to make a divider.
The kicker is I had my DD on a trailer hitched to the back. Going thru the passes in OR it was slow goin'.
Worked fine. I wish I could have figured out how to tie the suspension down (like when you load on a trailer anduse the winch to take some of the play out of the suspension.'
Do it!

Don't tell me I'm the only one who had visions of a Knight-Rider style entry here. You mean I'm the only one who read it as:

1TONTJ 02-07-2002, 10:18 AM Anyone know for sure that this is legal in the US, and Canada for sure (or for sure if it not). I think it should be legal, it is not over weight, and the 5 ton can handle two Jeeps, and we will chock them and strap them down. Sounds good?
Thanks,
Phil
Think I am going to do this, but do not want problems at the border when I enter the US, or return home to Canada...
welndmn 02-07-2002, 10:31 AM U-haul turned my friend away as well, hey say the rig on the trailer needs have a top and well (tell them you towing a honda they will never know)
but now (in my area anyway) they hook the trailers up for you, they would not rent a flat bed to my friend with a full size bronco, so he came to my house took my f250 hooked up the trailer, came back to my house and put the trailer on the back of the bronco, U-haul is just being as safe as they can, just tell them as little info as they need to know
I saw a friend of a friends VW car-men-giea (SP?) in the back of a UPS truck! he was even on the clock moving his junk, he was fired about 2 months later for other reasons

Karmann Ghia, weighs about 1500 lbs I think. Great cars. My first car was a 66 Ghia. When the battery died and the clutch cable broke, I'd push it then jump in and pop it in 2nd to start it.
brutus 02-07-2002, 03:55 PM
yagernc 02-07-2002, 04:19 PM I had just got out of college and was dead broke. I rented a 30' penske straight rail and hauled my TJ 800 miles, when i was moveing an ex back home. I used wooden planks at a local shoping center parking lot that hade a nice bank to back the truck up to.
I let alot of air out of the tires and lock it in 4wd.
THIS IS NOT LEGAL ! It has to do with fuel being in the vehicle. Enclosed and no placards outside.
The place my uncle works has a contract to tow big trucks off the thruway (NY) and he towed a guy that had 2 cars in a truck when the clutch let loose, U-haul "let" him pay for everything, granted the clutch just happen to go. So bacially do it at your own risk and prolly don't tell to many people about it...

Dan-H 02-07-2002, 04:21 PM I helped a guy stuff a 240z inside a Uhaul. He also towed a pathfinder behind it.
It was a bitch getting it in but it fit.
Skyetone 02-07-2002, 05:05 PM This is GREAT!! Im laughing my ass off. Someone get snortclown on the line. Gotta hear this story..... I may try it..... I'll let ya'll know in a few months (april)
NECKSTER 02-07-2002, 08:21 PM It was a 94 Ford, with the 7.3 diesel.... non turbo U-haul. We had Marks Jeep in the back with everybodies coolers, beds, and clothes. Then on the trailer behind it was Gabe's Toyota. It was definately slow going. On the way there, the U-haul truck pretty much died. Luckily it was a one way rental, but we had to go to Vegas to get the next one. We made it about 1 mile out of Vegas and broke down (empty) in the new U-Haul. That truck was pretty much dead by the time it got back up here too. LOL What a good time. It sure was slow though.
gunracer1 02-08-2002, 06:16 AM i have hauled two zuks in my wells cargo that has a 24' deck and it was a tight fit but very doable. i think it would be tough to fit a couple of cjs in it though.
Ryder also rents commercial type vehicles. They cost less than moving trucks. I rented a 5 ton stake bed that came with a lift gate and everything to move my shop equipment. For loading and unloading, many industrial areas have loading ramps all over the place.
I agree that bucking up for a trailer is probably your best bet.
Skyetone 02-08-2002, 07:15 PM hell I'll probably do both. Run the stocker behind the box truck. Anyone got pix or prices? hey nexter did they charge ya on the dead truck? What did that run ya $$$ wash to Jv..
Skyetone 02-08-2002, 07:18 PM Oh and for those who have done it what did ya use for ramps and what would you do different... I was thinking about 2feet 2x2 L steel inside then weld it to the 2x6 board with L runners on the sides for strength. Maybee some cross bracing
dawhipp 02-09-2002, 07:08 AM Geez, and I thought I was bad when my First Sergeant popped open a 20ft Conex container and my Jimmy was inside.
Skyetone 02-09-2002, 12:43 PM Got this pic from http://www.rockymountainextreme.com/

That was the way I read it. I had to check it out to see if there were any pictures of the wreck
dog walker 02-09-2002, 08:05 PM A few years ago we went down to the hammers and 2 of the rigs rode in the back of a U-haul truck, 24ft I think, and they used spare tires to butt the jeeps up against the walls, and parked them up against each other. Look in the trail reports section, I think there's some pics.
Jeff
Skyetone 02-09-2002, 09:14 PM i'll look for sure..
Dan-H 02-09-2002, 11:21 PM we used the car-hauler trailer as the ramp and backed the car onto the trailer then jacked both sides up with floor jacks to get it level with the bed of the Uhaul truck.
a loading dock would have made it alot easier
Skyetone 02-10-2002, 10:45 AM I'll look for a loading ramp. Found this pic in pirate trail reports
