HI!
I have a 2wd amigo 2.3L 4ZD1 (japenese axle housing/drum brakes). Anyone know the gear ratio for this rearend? Will the U.S. style housing gears interchange with the japanese style ones? Where can I find some gearsets for the japenese rearends if possible? Any info will be greatly appreciated!

Your gear ratio will be either 4.30 or 4.55 (Probably 4.55). The pickups had a ratio of 4.66 available in some years. I don't think that this ever migrated to the Amigo. Some Troopers came with 4.77, again, I don't think this ever migrated to the Amigo.

You asking about US style vs. Japanese style, not sure exactly what you mean. All 1989-1994 Amigos came with the Isuzu axles. All Troopers came with the Isuzu axles. The early Rodeos came with a 10-bolt GM rearend, the later Rodeos came with Dana 44s. Neither of these rear end components are intrerchangable with the Isuzu stuff.

Tera Manufacturing makes Isuzu gear sets, in 5.38 ratio for both the Isuzu 10-bolt and Isuzu 12-bolt axle housings.

Yours being a 2.3 with drum brakes "probably" makes it an Isuzu 10-bolt housing. Most of us have installed these gear sets in 'front' 10-bolt diffs. The rear and front 'should' be interchangable. I am not sure that anyone will tell you that for sure, even Tera.

Keep us posted.

PS On Guam, I am not sure if you would have a North American version or an Asian version of the Amigo, so take all of the above with a grain of salt.

I spoke to the guys @ independent and the axle I have is a one piece (toyota style) hence "japanese" version... I take it that this is the "isuzu" axle your mentioning??? I had a '93 2wd pickup 2.3 4zd1 before with a removable diff cover on the back of the housing (gm style) hence "U.S." version. I take it that my amigo is the asian version aswell since I'm in the pacific... I hope I'm not confusing anyone other than myself...

I also have a complete trooper rearend, i think it's off an '88 or '89 with the disc brakes. I once installed that on my 2wd pickup and it didn't feel all that different form the stock 4:10 (that came stock in most pickups except for the 2.6 space cab and the 4wd pickups) those were according to my findings were 4:30 or 4:55 depending on what style wheels it had... My reason for asking is I don't want to run the trooper axle on my truck again because the drive shaft is a little too long. How I made it fit was I drilled the leaf spring pin hole 1 inch back from the center hole on the saddle mount. It worked fine with the exception that I didn't have parking brakes(shot calipers!)... I would like to swap gears (diffs) from my amigo to my truck since the axle housings/brakes/etc are all the same.

On another note. The axle in question ('93 2wd amigo/'92 2wd pickup) looks like a 7" housing (alot smaller diff size than the trooper axle) which looks like an 8" housing (alot bigger!). I take it that the 7" (drum brake) housing is the Isuzu 10 bolt and the 8" (disc brake) is the Isuzu 12 bolt???? I guess to really know the truth is to pull them out and count some teeth... It would be great if it's a 4:55 that's excaclty what I'm looking for...

PS: the dealer was of no help, they told me they don't have the manuals for these models anymore (loosers!) Thanks for the feedback!

Yes, all Troopers w/ dics brakes have the Isuzu 12 bolt. The drum brakes indicate an Isuzu 10 bolt rear in the Amigo for sure, and also in the truck if the axle has a removal 3rd member (or what you have dubbed 'toyota style').

If that is the case, the gears should swap between the Amigo and truck without issue. But why not just swap the entire axle?

You can also just swap the third member if the housings are the same.
