It is the same as a regular transfer case but it has a vacume mechanism that locks the front axle in and out of 4WD. You still have a lever on this setup for High/Neutral/Low.

I have the setup on my Pig and it is really cool.

I have wheeled Cruisers with this setup that had front lockers and it made it super easy to pop the front in and out of 4wd so you could back up or make a tight turn.

I think the only drawback is that you have to have an airtight vacume to make it work and some of the tubes tend to dry rot on older Cruisers.

As a backup, you can always crawl under the Cruiser and manually lock it in :(

I hav eit in my 67- works great. I replaced the metal ines with rubber ones (as mine had tape on them to work from rot)
No wrestling with the floor lever (mine is dash operated), and like wngrog said, you can always just kick it in if you have to!

Plus it makes a cool vaccuum hiss when you engage it. :D

I kept the vac 3 speed xcase on my 70 pig. But I had to fab some hi-n-lo linkage because the 350 swap got in the way of the old dash mounted shifter linkage (exhaust got in the way). So now I have the vacuum switch on the dash, and the hi-n-lo on the floor. Works for me.

Is the vaccum electrical? Or something else. This one is way beond me. Do I need any special mods to mate it to my 79 4spd tranny?

it is baseicaly a vacume canister like
a cruise control or heater canister.

works off of engine vacume

but I guess you could buy a electric vacume pump.

the benefits as I see it are that it will
hold preashure against the engagement fork
untell the shafts reach the engagement position.
