After fighting all kinds of cranking voltage problems I finally solved the issue last night by running 4/0 wire from the dual optimas (in the rear tub) to the starter, and ground on the starter. I was getting a large voltage drop with the previous weenie welding cable setup, which was draining my batteries and limiting cranking speed. As you can imagine, in order to start a direct injected diesel with no glow plugs, you need a decent RPM to have stuff warm up. I finished up very late last night, seeing as my relationship with my very residential neighbourhood neighbours is already quite strained, I decided to put off starting the engine till tonight. I did give it a shot and it cranks a lot faster than before.
I am also interested in seeing how much happier the winch is with a dedicated 4/0 wire.
I'll let you guys know how it goes...
