: 60 springs on a 40?

Has anyone run this way? I have a full set of fj60 springs(thanks again Chris) that I keep eyeballing, wondering hoe they'd do under my 66 FJ40. The po put some pretty long shackles on it and air shocks to get the sag out I suppose. Next major mod will be 78 axels with discs up front. Looking for opinions on whether the 60's slightly longer springs would give more flex, softer ride? Looks like they would push those long shackles back to about 45* or so. Will I need anti inversion shackles? Comparing this setup to the quality and price of a Skyjacker system. thanks for any ideas/opinions!

One of my customers has his 40 on jacks right now doing this exact spring swap into his 40. One of the guys in our club, John Nelson [don't remember his Pirate name; I think it's tin cup] recommends it. He is using rear 60 springs on all 4 corners so that he only has to carry 1 main leaf for a spare for all. I think he is making new spring hangers to change the geometry of the shackles as well. I am sure I can get pics when it's done, but it may be a while.

I have 60 rears on the rear of my 40; I had to make new brackets for the springs as the 60 series spring eye is significantly larger than the 40 series (it won't fit in the stock bracket). It was a pain - I would try and find 55 springs if I were to do it again. In fact, I am scrapping this set-up in the not too distant future to put Chevy springs on (to gain more wheelbase).

If you want wheelbase, get youself a set of F150 springs and mount them further back. Easy as pie. If you use them at all 4 corners, you can top 100" on your wheelbase.

We have set up several with 60 springs... Paul May (Pres of WCC) runs them F&R on his 40, I run rear 60 springs on the rear of my 40.

I think splitpea (Dale) used to have them on the front of his 40. Hes sometimes on the list. I am interrested in the front springs at the moment for my SOA, so would like hear more about this as well.

if only they were like a rock...maybe on a 40, but on my 60, they're so squishy it's down right scary.. :flipoff2:

I run 60 springs flipped in the rear. They work fine. I moved my rear spring hanger back and built my own shackles. Not a hard thing to do.

I am eventually going to ditch the 60 springs for something like f150 springs to gain some more wheel base.

I am running 3" over OME 60 springs on the rear of my SO 40. The rear spring perches have been relocated into the frame and the (C) shaped shackles clear the frame well. Good conversion, bushings and bolt sizes were a pain. Rear TJ fender flares were added to finish off. FJ55 or reversed 40 springs would be easier install.

OK, what's the big benefit of longer wheelbase? Seems like it would gain a smoother ride, better towing manners. What does it do to improve articulation? Does it significantly increase turning radius? Seems like a little gain for alot of expense since it sounds like driveline length adjustments would be necessary. I have to lengthen and shorten right now anyway due to adding a 2F/4spd combo to my 66 so it's a good time to look into this.
Thanks for all the good ideas!

I'd like to pick up this thread again if anybody's willing. What kind of height difference was gained by you guys running the FJ60 springs? I'm trying to compare doing this v.s. a Skyjacker system. Wondering what tire size the 60 setup is clearing v.s. a 4" lift? Oh, and the wheelbase question sounds kinda dumb...but I guess I still am!
thanks

Go with Alcan . for $960 you get custom springs that you can order what length and hiegth and set the center pin wherevr to get the wb you want . I did my 40 with these and got 95 wb and still have aux. tank in back and no major mods to get extra wb. flex is nice , droop is way better than with rancho's or OME's

You might consider using these conversion bushings (http://jtoutfitters.zoovy.com/product/CONVBUSH) from JTO. That way you can use an FJ40 spring eye pin. I used them when I put 60 springs on the rear of my 40 - they were just a little big so I had to dremel down the OD a little, and the shoulder just a little.

Why buy something you need to modify..
THe fJ40 uses a 15mm fixed spring pin, FJ60 an 18mm fixed spring pin, Determine what shoulder width on the bushing you need, the ID and Od of the spring eye and each shackle pin size, then buy/order bushings accordingly..
Just order your bushings by size, not application

So, how much lift did this give you? Any driveline mods needed?

So, any hints on who might carry a good selection of bushing sizes? In theory of course buying the exact size is definitely the way to go. Seems I rarely connect with the appropriate vendor with the appropriate part and end up modifying :shaking: Not sure if I'm going to use these 60 springs...I'm still trying to gather info on what kind of package it's gonna give me. Thanks!
