got this email, don't know anymore about it

dave

Hello, my name is Rich Hansil, and I'm a producer with
RDF Media (makers of Junkyard Wars on TLC). We're
currently working on a new show that your club members
may be interested in. Our new show is a competition to
design and build the ultimate off-road vehicle from
scratch, and then subject it to hard-core testing and
racing. We are giving teams from all over the world one
month and about $3000 to build their machines. Hopefully,
these will be really imaginative in design and should be
able to cope with a wide range of terrains. Selected
teams and their machines will be flown to England to race
in an enormous arena, just outside London. Basically it's
a chance to test your skills against people from all over,
and have a lot of fun in the process. Time is creeping up
on us, though - we would need to get applications and videos
in by February 15th. I've attached an information sheet
about the show, which you can feel free to forward to whoever
you like.

The application is available on the website at:
http://www.ultimatemachinecombat.com
If there any questions I can answer for you, you can reach
me at this email (richard.hansil@rdfmedia.com)
or at (818) 817-5200.

If you know of anyone else that you think would be
qualified, please feel free to pass this on to them.

Thanks
Rich Hansil

The thing is that you would have to take off work for a month unless you just wanted to work on it on the weekends! That would suck if you could only do that cause Im sure that you would loose.

I dont know about yall but I cant put my life on hold for a month just to compete on Junkyard wars, even though it would be REALLY fun.

Sounds like a TIN:skull:BENDER challange to me.

02-07-2002, 08:26 AM
Yeah I think it would be a blast but I don't want to put that much work into something and have the chance of not going on the show. Now if you could submit a team and they would select you and then build it that might be better. I got school to finish.

i think he is trying to say that he is better than you.

It is amazing that people actually think that they are legends of fabrication, driving, designing etc be cause they are on the internet.

I think some people need to get off their ass and actually TRY to do all the things they claim to be experts in!!

Just because you have some stupid shit written under your name doesnt give you any cred on the trails!!

Fuck idiots like tin bender shit me!!

DaBeef was merely putting his name down to be involved.

Well how would this work anyway? So they give you $3000
I though this show was just find it int he yard and build it in a day? Seems a little wierd...
Say I get my $3g's
Well, I have this spare 460 worth $5000 laying around, I have this spare set of 44's..
There is no way I can see this working...
Now, if they put teams in a yeard yes.. But this heres some $$ Build it would be like the Yankees vs Twins "real" payroll, FAWKED!!

We will see I guess..
Just gonna need more info :D

Chad H
02-08-2002, 04:11 AM
Well I read into it, sure they give ya $3000.. BUT, you can spend as much as you want of your own $$.. So, anyone with deep pockets will be the winner... Not fair at all... Im definetly no longer interested..
I do think the show will be cool, but unfair.. Somebody will have a rig with a fuelie Rat engine, Rockwells 4Wheel steering, 44's, Coil springs Suspension.. Itll be fawking screw city for the 1979 Bronco tossed together for $3,000..:usa:

ULTIMATE MACHINE COMBAT

Information
Ultimate Machine Combat is all about cars and mayhem.

Ultimate Machine Combat is the new show from the creators of TLC's >> Junkyard Wars and Channel 4's >> Scrapheap Challenge. It will test machines and drivers to the limits of their tolerances and beyond.

That's where you come in. We are looking for the 30 most brilliant teams from around the world to engage in Ultimate Machine Combat. The format is simple and like all good games, the rules are too. Each week, three teams enter the arena but only one team lives to fight another day.

Each team we choose will get 30 days and a pot of money to build the ultimate fighting vehicle. You will build it in your own backyard and then we will transport it to our secret arena where it will fight to survive the rigours of Ultimate Machine Combat.

We will be giving you enough money to build a no-frills vehicle, but if you want to spend more, we won't try and stop you. You may even enlist extra help with the engineering, although only three of you will travel to the competition.

Since this is the biggest, baddest motor-contest ever, we are looking for teams with exceptional skills, a passion for all things mechanical and a competitive streak that borders on the insane. The team must be able to fix, repair or jury-rig the vehicle in any way possible to get it working and at least one team member must have driving and racing experience.

On the next pages you will get a flavour of what you need to become an Ultimate Machine Combatant. There are application forms for you to fill out and much more information about the show.

If you get through our exhaustive selection process we will come and visit you and hand over the loot to get you started.

Good luck - you're going to need it.

If you have any questions, please read our >> FAQ

Otherwise, go to: >> How to apply

The contest looks pretty cool the first time I you read it...but your right its basicly ulimited funds IF you have the $$$ or sponors and you want to spend it:eek:

and just remember what ever you take, its probably not coming back in the same shape it was:D

camo
02-08-2002, 06:36 AM
actually what ever you take is not coming back at all. they are only paying to ship a rig to england. besides when i talked to rich he assured me that the likley hood of any rig surviving is slim. if my team is chosen i assure you i will go out and find a sponsor to help with my design. either way i plan on spending at least 10k on my build up.

think about it. they give you 3k and each team member kicks in 1k, and you go find a sponsor for the other 4k. seems easliy attainable to me.

DRM

Tube bodied rig is the way to go - simply because of the "must be able to take ramming" factor

And no - spending the most money would NOT guarantee you win...

From the looks of things, you may want to build a rig with the following attributes to be able to win

-able to pull heavy loads
-fast
-good braking
-able to handle "impacts" from other vehicles or obstacles
-maneuverable

I would think 4 wheel steering may be a good idea if maneuverability is a big factor in theor courses....

If you have to spend more than 3 to 4 k on the machine it would be worth it but 10 grand now that is ridiculous. I think when they give you 3 thousand you should only use that money not no more. If you are a true craftsman in building vehicles than you would only need 3 thousand, if you need more you are only buying your way to victory. Just like in the ARCA Comp. Money wins mopst the time. I think it would be fair to only allow people to use the money they give you. Besides who wnat to spend more on a vehicle that you will probably not get to keep. They do not even know if they will let you keep it. My team if picked will use what we get we have no xtra money to just through away. We can still build a machine like they want for little or no money. I want to get picked cause this would be a blast.:usa:

So how I doubt you will find anything like you guys are discribing above. Unless someone from this 4x4 community enters. Just basing this off other shows but it seems like the only ones that know anything bout 4x4 are the American that are involved in 4x4ing. No of the other teams seem to know much. It would be awesome if some of you guys wanted to give it a go. I woud think you would be able to get some 4x4 manufactors sponsers failry easily for something like this. I would love to help out but afraid I don't have much expirence.

in my mind alot of you have lost the idea of the show, there is a reason that it is called junk yard wars, the trucks are to be built from junk, as far as the budget of 3000 went i think this was to prevent the deep pocket winning....i maye wrong on both accounts but from what i have seen of the show there has never been a deep pocket aspect involved.

the 3rd point i would raise, people say to get sponsors and put in there own money to build the kick ass rig, 10 grand i read, but think of how much $$$$ you have in your rigs and they are nowhere near kickass on all types of terrian.

I think it could be a good competetion...We (americans) have a advantage in the wheeling aspect..but there are alot of countries into heavy equipment type custom work...IF that crossses their mind or not is the question..

also I think if they give you a decent junkyard and 3k then it would be OK..but hell if not all 3k will get you is some tube, shocks and tires....???so while I agree that the "deep pockets thing" would suck..if no yard then how the hell are you supposed to do this and get anything cool??

I guess you could get people to secretly sponsor you by selling a decent starter rig for like 50 bucks ..

also is the travel expenses for team paid??

so whats the entries so far??

and hey tinbinder you really shit me man .. HAHA arent newbies so cute when they are mad

Its seems there are enough connections on this board to contribute any Junk you could ever need. I'm also sure people could write off this charitable contribution on their taxes should you choose to race in the name of your favorite organization. (with permisson of course) ie: Red Cross, Big Brothers, MADD, NRA etc.
To date I haven't seen a Junkyard Wars race course that would require much more than a $3k truck.

I already sent in a tape on a lark. I'm no 4x guru and use this board to help me get answers to the many questions I have while buildin my FJ. But I'm a teacher with time off and access to the fully equipt auto shop. The shop teacher is a gung ho redneck ASE certified master mechanic and on the team- look out boys!

FYI- you don't get it back. Property of the show.

Sponsership allowed but no stickers/advertisments on the vehicle. Can be used in in house promo material at the discretion of the show. good luck gettin real $$$

you build it here they ship it over- must fit in a 8x8x20 shipping container. (you can disassemble IF you can get it back together in 4hrs)

They do not supply a junkyard as in the show.

I hope the spirit of the show remains intact, I'd hate to get on and have to compete against some big money, purpose built exotic built by some rich fuck that doesn't get it- that would suck:(

This makes more sense.

Quoted from the web site:

Q: Can I spend some of my own money on my vehicle?

Yes – you may spend as much as you like. You don’t have to spend anything since we will provide enough money for a basic vehicle and bear in mind that we will keep the vehicles once they have been built.

Q: May I take my machine home with me?

We will take a leaf from demolition derby's book and hang on to the vehicles once the games are over. This is for various liability and insurance reasons. It also ensures that teams don't "overspend" on their vehicles. If you know you aren't getting it back, you're not going to spend a $1,000,000 on it, right? That way the competition stays open to everyone - not just millionaires!
