: The Nissan goes under the knife
projckt_Wldkat 12-01-2004, 03:05 PM I got an 83 PU that I've decided to build up much like fsjeep1 did a month or so ago.
Plans are to run toyota axle front and rear, packed with 4.37's. The rear will be welded up and the front will house a lunch-box locker of some sort. Since I won't be driving the truck till summer, I will also convert the rear to disc brakes. Hy-steer in in the works for the front as well. hoping for around 4-5" of lift while running 33's.
Will be building custom front and rear bumpers as well as rock-rails. I will also be cutting 14" out of the bed.
Here's what I'm starting with.

projckt_Wldkat 12-01-2004, 03:08 PM Picked up the front axle and got it cleaned up and painted.

projckt_Wldkat 12-01-2004, 03:09 PM Beign 150 miles away form my truck, this project will take some time. I managed to strat gettign the fornt-end aprt, but have to wait till I can get some garage space to get teh IFS out.

projckt_Wldkat 12-01-2004, 03:11 PM The bed with a spare in place. The 14" will still give me enough room to fit a 36 spare when I eventually go that big.

Have fun with the build and post when you get further along. :beer:
Hillclimber 12-02-2004, 09:01 AM Nice truck, Might want to think about the toy 4.6 gears for the 33's, 4.37's turn 31's nicely, but will be dogs with 33's and traction. Good luck
projckt_Wldkat 12-02-2004, 11:17 AM Thnaks for the imput, I just don't have the money for new gears, I'm getting a deal on a set of 3rd's with 4.37's. I'll probably end up running some 31's till I get a job this summer anyway.
I'm picking up the rear axle for sure this weekend, and hopefully will be gettign the 3rd's as well as a bunch of othe axle junk. Myabe I'll even start hacking the bed. :smokin:
Hey guys, I've decided to post beacuse I am currently working on my 1986 2WD Hardbody. It's got Z24i and I am doing a big swap with Patrol frame and parts: I got 160 Patrol LWB frame, getting Patrol 4 speed and x-case and Patrol 9.5" axles with 4.375. I am planning to use it as DD for now and I am wondering about my Z24 perfomance with Patrol gear box and whould it be happy with 31" tires?
My original Hardbody tranny (FS5W71B) ratios:
Nissan Gear Ratios (http://members.optushome.com.au/amaxeng/five10/gearbox.htm)
1 = 3.592
2 = 2.057
3 = 1.361
4 = 1.000
5 = 0.852
R = 3.382
while Patrol 160/MQ (F4W81A manual 4 speed) are:
1 = 4.222:1
2 = 2.370:1
3 = 1.440:1
4 = 1.000:1
R = 4.622:1
or
1 = 3.897:1
2 = 2.370:1
3 = 1.440:1
4 = 1.000:1
R = 4.267:1
Patrol transmission ratios are slightly higher than my original tranny but I have identical R&P in my axle and in Patrol - 4.375 - Can I go higher - say 33"? I am sorry - math was never my thing.
You sir are a basturd, you have a Patrols and we don't. I say you need some 35's and lockers and for christs sake get some good shocks. Then you will have a phat rig. :grinpimp:
Hillclimber 12-03-2004, 11:31 AM Try this link for Calculators, Basicly you need to decide what speed you want to travel then work backwards to figure out the tire/gear combo. There are other calculators if you do a search. Also you need to figure out what ratio that patrol tranny is, those gears are very different.

Ok! Here's the deal - we'll exchange all patrols for toy trucks and fj40s! :flipoff2:
here's FX2's hardbody's doublecab for the project:

What is a "Patrols"? :confused:
XterraGuy 12-07-2004, 10:24 AM The Nissan Patrol, one of the few REAL 4x4s left. Strong motors, beefy solid axles on coils front and rear, and almost indestrutctable.

I've got an 1979-1988 Patrol's 160/MQ LWB stock frame. Yesterday I've bought from a friend front and rear Patrol axles (9.5" 4.375, LSD in the rear), 4 spd Patrol transmission and x-case that will mate to my existing Z24i (Pathy's/Hardbody motor).
On Friday I plan completly tear apart my crashed 1986 Hardbody PU (http://www.geocities.com/sr5_fx2/d21/d21_crashed.htm) and it's motor for my project. I'd love to get a bigger motor or a nice deisel (like turbo 3.3 but there is a lot of paper work required in Russia to legalize motor change on the vehicle) but I'll stick to my healty Z24 for now.

This weekend I plan to make a rolling Patrol chassis. Friend of mine giving me for temp his 255/85R16 BFG MTs (33"x10.50R16). It's going to be Hardbody double cab on Patrol 160 LWB chassis.
Here is a picture of typical Patrol 160/MQ LWB - I am using it's drivetrain:

Fortunatly, here in Russia we've got lot's of old Patrols. They are and their parts are much cheaper that Toyota. I think 160 Patrol LWB is similar to Toyota LandCruiser 60.
projckt_Wldkat 12-09-2004, 07:52 PM Finished assembling the axles and cleared the garage for the big part of the project. Still a ways away though, need to get some parts:
-figure out how I'm gonna steer the best
-front toyota calipers and pads
-birfield C-clips
-Waggy leaf sping packs
-steel
BTW anyone know why my pics posted ealier would suddenly get "X"d?
Your image hosting site must be down or something.
I'm using heims on my steering, that was the easiest way to do it since Nissan had the rod end built into the pitman. I just burnt out the rod end and took a bunch of 1/8" flat stock and beefed up the entire arm, covered the burnt out hole, drilled a 5/8" hole for the bolt and that was it.
If it was me I would just do a high steer setup, use a stock yota rodend on the knuckle side of the draglink and heim on the pitman side.
projckt_Wldkat 12-10-2004, 10:37 AM thanks for the idea. souds like a good one.
could you post pics of you pitman arm?
Sure thing. The stock pitman is under there someplace. :D

The thing is friggin beefy, I must have added about 5 lbs of steel to it. I still need to get a longer bolt and make the mount double sheer, it has worked great so far, and was easy to do.
I also just had to post a pic of my truck with the new Bogger's on it. :shaking:

projckt_Wldkat 12-19-2004, 11:47 AM hlb3- thanks for the pics, that's one big nissan. Do you know if any heim joints will fit the stock Nissan tie-rod?
well, i pikced up the remainder of my steering parts yesterday as well as a set of Waggy springs for the front. I'll be getting teh C-clips tommarow or tuesday and hope to have all the IFS crap out by Wednesday.
Pics will be up as soon as I use up the rest of the roll. :cool2:

You only have to drive to Mexico for those...
