: Front Locker Advise on Daily Driver Jeep

I will have a Ford RC Dana 44 in the front of my YJ. Trying to decide on the type of locker to use. It is my daily driver and my four wheeler.

DETROIT ????????

It will not affect the front end in 2wd because I can unlock the hubs, but will it cause the bearings to wear out faster? More prone to break axle shafts due to the 'banging' on the shafts when it engages?

OX ???????????

I heard that when you install the Ox, you have to shave down the pinion and housing...what about snagging the cable on rocks or other obstacles? Very expensive too~ $600 plus $80 for the cable.....

I am not even considering an ARB or spool. I'll spool the rear 44 though...

You don't shave the pinion when installing an Ox--but there is a tiny bit of casting on the inside of diff housing that you need to grind off to clear the fork. About 1/4th of an inch or so. Takes 5 minutes.

I paid $750 a piece for my D44 Ox lockers, so unless the price went down, that's what you should expect to pay. And yeah--they are expensive, but worth it, in my estimation.

I brought up the shaving down issue because in my search I read this:

"I ran into the same trouble with 4.10 gears! DTD told me to pull the gears and grind the pinon down a little bit. So I end up with a slider ring crashing into a pinon gear! This had me hot! I ended up grinding the ring down instead of pulling the gears."

You would think as expensive as the units are that Ox Trax would have addressed these issues already...

Where did you mount the shifter in your Jeep? Any pictures of it?

Tell me if I'm wrong but doesn't a Ford RC Dana 44 use Lock outs?
.
With the lockouts unlocked, case in 2wd, on the street, it won't make a big $hit what you have in the front. You can run a spool and its not pulling. The wheels a free wheeling

As far as grinding pinion gears, I don't know... (Maybe that's a D30 Issue? I dunno) I just know that I used 4.27 Genuine Spicer gears and the only grinding necessary was on the inside of the casting... Maybe it's just a problem on higher-ratio R&P gears...?

I mounted both switches on the center tranny tunnel hump on a custom bracket that I made from leftover bracket peices from a garage door. :D Don't laugh! It looks and works SWEET. I'll try to get a picture of it if I remember...
