: Cage/Tube Frame pics..

Here's a couple updated shots of the Cruiser with the new cage and rear tube frame on it.

It's all 2" .120 wall ERW tube bent with a manual pro-tools bender. It's my first attempt at a cage, but it turned out pretty good so far. The new fuel cell will be going behind the seats, and the cage will be tied in at the front door post and behind the rear pillar. The front fenders will also get the tube treatment, but that's not done yet. The rear has been stretched a further 6 inches back, and the wheelbase will be 110" when complete. The frame at the rear upper coil mounts sits is 43" from the floor.

Nasty.
Just plain nasty.

I feel like such a wimp.
(I would insert a photo of my little cruiser here, but I am ashamed.....)

not sure if that is a cruiser anymore but it is bad ass. I guess it still has the cowl and the entire front. Do you think you saved any weight this way?

I think you are really going to like the extra wheelbase, good thinking.

I, for one, still see PLENTY Cruiser there! Keep up the AWESOME work. I love that rig!

i don't think I'll save much on weight, but my front rear ratio will be more even.

I moved the (larger) gas tank to the rear and at 32 gallons@6.17 lb/gallon, that's 200 lbs plus the tool box @ ~100 lbs.

I'm also thinking of moving the winch and Rad to the rear as well.

So if I move the winch and rad back, that will likely be about -200lb off the front, and about +300lb (with the box/change in gas tank) to the rear.

Couple more angles.

Thanks for the positive reply's It's been a lot of work. Every weekend, every night. Bending 2 x .120 isn't that hard. It just takes a while.

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!

What is your welder of choice there? Hard to tell, but on some welds I don't even see them. TIG?

Feel free to post even more photo's!

ERW -- I need to come up to speed, as I am from the old school of "no seams on roll cage tubing". Anyone have a good metal reference on the tubing. Hmm... now just to find time, and if I get a buyer for the '84 FJ60.... time for a new wire feed MIG welder. :D

I have an Air Liquide 200N 220v MIG. Very similar to the Millar 200.

As for the welds, a lot of the cage is just tacked right now.

ERW - electrical resistance weld

Formed tube from a flat plate of rolled steel, and then electrically welded along a seam. You can see the seam in ERW tube.

DOM - Drawn over Mandral -starts life as ERW tube that has been drawn over a mandral when formed. It's still seamed tubing, but the DOM process minimizes the seam. The DOM process produces consistent wall thickness, where ERW can leave thin spots.

Nope. I could never do that to a work of art like their tubs. I had some aluminum fender guards. That's it.

any chance you could get a shot of where the tube frame meets the cruiser frame. Did I say that thing was awesome yet.

I hate to bring this up but I have seen some of your wheeling videos and feel the need to ask what you're planning on doing to keep the mud from coating you and the inside of the windshield?:D Nice work, sad to see the cruiser body eat it but it looks good.

I'll be running full doors, a bikini top, the rear hoop gets a canvas back with window, and the cross bar gets a sheet of 24 gauge by the backs of the seats. The triangles behind the door will be capped and so will the space between the two rear pillers.

It will be more mudproof than last year. The rear is going to be open, but the gas tank and tool box are both waterproof, so that's ok.

Tim.

Very sweet!

On the tail/stop lights did you use the regular bulbs or the LED version lights?

At least your tail lights are much higher then my FJ40 stock items. Getting tired of blowing bulbs when I get into the water! :D

LED Tail/Stop lights (http://www.commandelectronics.com/clearance-lights.html) Spotted another site for the same items, but cheaper, can't find it at the moment. Cool factor, and nice not getting stopped for a burned out tail light!
