Hey I am 16 and for christmas I am gettin a 1989 4x4 Toyota Pickup automatic. It is extended cab and short bed. I want to at least get some 35" tires maybe 33" but no smaller:). I know nothing about it and I was wondering do I get a body lift and suspension lift ???? I noticed I can get like a 3 inch body lift for like 150 - 200 dollars then a 4" suspension lift cost like 800 dollars. I was wondering do I get both or what and would that be a big enough lift for 35" tires? If you have any suggestions plz tell me.

Read the FAQ's and if that is too much for you then try a less extreme site!!!!! These people might hurt your feelings and we wouldn't want to get a newbie discouraged.

If you put your location people might be able to help you out by showing you what they have done to their trucks to give you a better understanding of what is needed for your vehicle.

You need to tell us what you are planning on doing with your truck.
Is it your only mode of trans.
How often do you plan on wheeling?
What are the current specs of the truck as far as engine size and gear ratio. Give as much info as you can so we can help you out.

As for everyONE else that posted replies, Unless this post was moved there is no reason to be treating this kid like this. Go boost your thread count over in the General forum telling people how much better you are than them. and than read this:Lances Editorial (http://www.pirate4x4.com/opinion/lance-12-04.html)

are you going to wheel this off road? or just a run in the mud trolling for chicks:) let us know, 35"s are too much for serious wheeling with your stock IFS front end. I think 33's and a 3" body lift will do it.

hello rebel, only one caution about this bulletin board: when you start lurking and seeing what others are doing to their trucks, it will only want to make you spend more money than you have :D

I agree with seabass, start out small with the 3" BL and 33's. Good luck!

Dam....I gotta agree with seabass on this one. If your a poor-ass 16 year old and can't afford crapola then do a body lift and some skinny 33s. If you have the SR5 deluxe package then you probably have 7" wide aluminum rims so 33" x 10.50 fits great with no rubbing on tight turns.

You could also get a 'free' 1.5" lift out of the front by simply crankin the torsion bars about 12 turns each.....
In the rear you could do something like I did if you can fab a little http://zuk.tripod.com/dadcoil.htm Of course, I did this to my 87 Runner and since I had all the stuff just laying around, the entire lift was FREE....NO COST in cashola.

you didn't mention what type engine and transmission it will have
4 cyl or v6? 5 speed or auto?

yep I also agree

do not put 35's on a ifs with the torsion bars turned up for lift. if you do, it is very suseptible to breakage. half shafts and cvs are weaker when turned up like that and with 35's they will break. it would just be a matter of time if you wheel much at all.

a body lift and 33's turn the t bars for a little extra lift, and maybe some extended shackles in the rear, maybe a lock right locker to get started with. this will give you a very capable truck. then don't plan anything else until you are maxing out what you already have. and you can save the rest of your money for future build ups. then put on the 35's wheel it till it breaks and then convince your parents you need to beef it up for the bigger tires.

33's and a locker will take you places to get you started wheeling. then once you have some wheeling under your belt and have saved up for it and have decided to go big

do a sas (solid axle swap) 5-6 inches of lift trim the fenders remove the b/l and so on and so on

but for a few hundred you can get a lock right 200.00
and you already mentioned a body lift and the install is easy enough.
roger brown has a b/l kit with all the hardware and stuff.
and your tires again don't waste money on all terains get some mud tires of some sort. you be happier with them.

don't waste your money on an ifs lift or an ifs locker. you might want to get some sliders though. and keep an eye out for a solid front axle for future sas

but for a beginning wheeler an 87 with 3 inch b/l 33x10.5's and a locker
will be a good starting point. and keep it simple enough that your able to learn how to drive it to it's limits. I wouldn't even get the locker right off the bat. because learning how to drive it with out one will teach you how to find a good line. and keep you out of a lot of trouble until you learn some of the limits of the trucks drivability. then lock it and learn all over again. then decide if you need more.

if you must spend money get a winch bumper and winch as well.

extreme is fun but it is also exspensive. and carnage is likely, possibly to the total loss of your truck.

I've had the same toyota for 19 years have had some of the best times of my life wheeling it. and it is still my daly driver.

you might want to consider just getting some 31 10.5's at first. just to keep from having to regear the axles. if you go with 33's and leave the stock gears most likely 4:10's it will be very sluggish and have very little power. 4:56's work well with 33's so do 4:88's

Also look at other boards as well to get ideas from some who aren't so extreme.

When i was seventeen, i was really into having the biggest most badass truck in school, I didnt care about wheeling, or looking in whether or not my truck could handle it or not, so here goes. I had a 91 toyota ex. cab sr5v6, First off i put a superlift five suspension, seeing as superlift was the only comp. that made anything bigger than a 4", and i ran 35's and they rubbed a pretty good. after that it just became an addiction, next thing ya know i ordered a 3" body lift from perf. accessories, threw that on with 38's and amazingly it didnt really rub because the body and frame were separated enough to not rub on the fire wall like on most yotas. that lasted about a year and then i got bored with it, so i put add-a-leafs in the rear and heavy duty torsion bars from downey on the front, and cranked my torsion bars for more lift in the front. and ran 40's, after that i ran it for about 6months and then it seemed like it started to nickel and dime me to death, one prob. after another, i guess i was just naive and wouldnt listen to anyone as long as everyone (especially the ladies) thought my truck was just the hottest thing since sliced bread. So to cut it short, liftin an ifs toy is not a bad thing, but be realistic, 4" with 33's is about the biggest you want to go unless you want to start runnin into probs. or better yet cut off your ifs and straight axle it and run whatever you want. Just remember bigger isnt always better, your drive train might not agree with you on how big ya want to go either, big tires put alot of stress on it. hope it helps ya make a good choice!
