: '85 4runner front end questions...

I'm switching out the 3rd in the front of my 4runner. I didnt think it would be so much more work then the rear that I did last weekend. I'm just going by the Haynes manual here.

I need to know what size locknut and adjusting nut are in the front axle of the '85. Its pretty damn big... I'm hopping I can go to Sears tomorrow and pick up a socket that will fit it

Once I get those nuts off I should be able to take the hub off and then the knuckle spindle and the axle will follow correct?

Also, this is a a really stupid question but what is this? It looks like its some kind of link to keep the suspension for flexing too much... hence it looks like if I remove it I'd get more flex? It looks like it'd need to come out anyway when I put my highsteer in someday...

That just controls the wrap of the springs. (it's a 1 link :flipoff2: )
You could cut it out and probably never know the difference since you have new springs.

Any chance of a local place carrying the 54mm hub socket? I love marlin but my daily driver is in pieces in the garage.

Another stupid question about weird things that hang down to my axle. The rear load brake proportion thing that hangs down to the rear axle... does it really matter that much especially if I dont plan on towing? If I cut it off what is the best position to leave the bar in?

The eqivalant socket size to 54mm is 2 1/8". I think they were like $23 or something last time I checked at Sears. That thing is the torque rod...get rid of it 'cause you don't need it. The rear brake proportioning valve can be removed, but if you remove it, be sure to replace it with an adjustable proportioning valve from Summit. They're about $40.

you know you can squeeze by without getting that $23 2.125" socket at Sears by careful use of a screwdriver and taphammer.......it's probably fairly loose anyways......especially the 'inside' nut. Those nuts can tolerate cosmetic damage. FYI

I'd use a screw driver to get it off but I got to trun around and put it right back on... from what I've been reading its fairly important to set those things at the right torque, so I'll probably need the tool to put it back on right?

that is your torqe rod that makes you axle not wrap up on braking but yes if you take it it gives you more flex. and you need it out and cut the bracket when you do crossover

Correct, you'll need the socket to torque it right.
My local toyota dealer carries those sockets, too.
Also Southern Auto Supply.

Got it all back together and rolled it out tonight. In 4wd low it really crawls around my yard nice. Cant wait to get it on the trails, thanks for the help.
