What source should I use for the gear oil for the nv4500? I called the Chev dealer and they want $20/qt and the dodge dealer wants $25/qt. I know its an expensive trans but $80-100 of oil????
Is there a cheaper source for the same syn oil?
thanks,
Charly

AA (not that I'm saying buy it from them) offers Castrol Syntorq (NOT syntech) LT 75W-85W for the NV4500. In heir NV4500 "book" the go on explaining the reason to use the specific oil (synchros etc.), and say it's available at the dealers(even offering the PNs), but then they say we sell the Castrol Syntorq.........so, it 's got to be the same stuff.
I haven't looked to see where else its available yet, but it's got to be around.

so you have to have a special gear oil for the synchros? $20 a quart is way too expensive, there has to be an alternative, anyone know?

I called Redline Synthetic and they recommended their MT-90 oil, 6 bucks a quart, available directly from them. It's heavier than MTL.
I've had it in for 3 years with no problems.

Cheapest I've heard of was standard trans (www.standardtrans.com ?), I think $56/gallon.

There was actually a REALLY good discussion (long though) on the Dodge board. The only place I know where to still find it (don't  but)

Use only the Castrol oil specified on the case of the tranny. Otherwise your sychros won't last long. I heard this from someone with alot of experice.. HAAA
