Alright I am in the process of gathering everything i will need to put 36's on my cherokee. Im running 33's right now, not locked with a 30/35 combo. Im building a 44 rear out of an 87 chero, spooled w/ 4.88's and am thinking of keeping the 30 up front. do you think with a lockrgiht and the stronger shafts/u-joints out of a newer axle it will hold up? what is your guys expirience with this set-up? Thanks

Fwiw, 36's are a very large step up from 35's ( I know you had 33s). Swampers not only weigh much more than mud terrains but have much better traction too. It'll definately be a time bomb, esp with a locker. I say don't waste your time putting a locker in it, way til it blows up without one and upgrade.

If you wheel hard, I would not lock it on 36s without first upgrading to chromoly axles and CTM/OX u-joints. If you are a pansy wheeler, you'll be just fine. :D

you should just wait until you build something else for the front and just run 35s for now. my dad had a set of 36in swampers and those thing were heavy.

We put a locker in my buddies jeep with a dana 30 and boom on barret lake......that is with 31's. So go figure.

I had 37" boggers on my locked D30 before I got my D60...It did eat axleshafts and U-Joints but it was possible (I had to be VERY careful!). I tried Warn's alloy shafts which worked a little better. I did blow a U-joint which bound up in the knuckle which twisted the splines on the inner Warn shaft and destroyed both balljoints and the outer knuckle (which was the right side high steer knuckle :mad3: ). After this happened, I decided to stop throwing money into that POS axle and get something a little bigger. Anyone looking for a D30 w/ 4.88 and a detroit w/ Warn shafts (CJ Widetrac)??? :D

Thanks for all the input. i do have a 9" and a 44 that i thought about building. Maybe ill look into that. I could probably sell my 44 for around 300 and just use these axles.

I dunno that Id try it.. Im swapping in an HP 44 8 lug with dual piston brakes, for better braking, the bigger ball joints, ring and pinion, axle shafts, stronger hub setup... and I'll be running 37's.. but I wouldnt try anything above a 35" tire on a D30..
