I have a 78 federal 40 with mostly stock drivetrain (downey smog legal headers and non usa dist being the only exceptions). I am having a problem with the egr system... If I pull the big main line that is supposed to be the feed line dumps the exhaust into the base of the carb off and then apply vaccum to the EGR Valve I can hear plenty of ehaust coming through the valve.. BUT... when i hook it back up like it is supposed to be and put vaccum on it at idle it doesnt kill the engine (like it should?)
also any tips tuning the 78 would be appreciated
smog is for:rainbow:

It doesn't have to kill the engine, but at least it should slow noticably. It may help if you adjust the idle mixture according to the "lean drop" method described in the manual and make sure that the idle speed is correct.

As long as the EGR valve is working it may not matter. In the dyno test areas, they no longer check the EGR function manually as they can check it on the dyno. At least they didn't manually check mine last time they had it on the dyno and they told me that they didn't have to when I asked them why they no longer did the manual test.

Glad I live in rural California. If the EGR is there, it passes.

yeah.... f cally but it is a Rhode Island Truck (I am in the military) Just trying to get it to pass (have not even taken it in for the dyno). I pieced together a smog setup along with a buddy.. RI used to be really cool but for me it still works since I am here and all their sniffers are there:D

Either you have a cool smog technician or he is lazy. They are supposed to do the manual function test in the non-dyno areas.

Interestingly enough, if I did not happen to already have a base sticker, the only place in california that I would not be legally able to drive my cruiser would have been on base... isnt there somewhere that people learn not to make life harder on themselves than it has to be? the bases in cally require a smog check even for out of state vehicles in order to drive on base but due to federal laws you can still have you car registered in the original state... sooooooo :rainbow:
