: dana 60 math
troutbum 02-07-2002, 01:53 PM Ever since I bought the 440 :D:D for the scout I have been looking at 60s. The cheapest is to go full width, but I have alot in my 44 front, and I can't afford to upgrade both at the same time. So that means I need to cut down the 60. And have custom shafts done. Well if I am doing that I dont want to stick with 30 spline, so here is what I am thinking
$500 d60 housing w/ 9" ends. stck width
$235 40 spline spool
$300 Gears install kit and bearings
$400 Custom 40 spline Axles
$350 Exploder brakes
1800.00 Total. + shipping
Its a ton of fawkin' cash, but is it worth it to have a custom 40 spline 60?
jdjanda 02-07-2002, 02:02 PM No, that's alot of money for a SF rear 60. 35 spline should be enough, up front or rear, consider CTM's and alloy axles for the 44. Outback use a dually 14 bolt or t-all rear SF 60 with 35 spline axles both are 63".
That Mick 02-07-2002, 03:33 PM 1800 bucks??? Day-um, thats a bucnh of bucks... Kinda glad I have my source. $250 for a complete IH D70 front, anyone???
Tony Sobrito 02-07-2002, 04:19 PM Mick
What year/model IH did this come out of? Can you get wms and spring pad c/l measurements for me. If that lines up... And its a complete, single rear wheel type 8 lug dana 70 front end with 4.88 ratio in good working condition with everything including the tie rod, locking hubs etc...
How about $350 total shipped to any san diego freight dock or 92056.
building a travelette longbed tow rig!
thanks
Tony
That Mick 02-07-2002, 04:51 PM Sorry Tony, no measurments. I'm here and they're there, and its 300 miles between here and there. :( Provided they haven't been sold (The trucks are in a 'yard near my folks place) they were/are out of 70-73 1310's. (I think).
it'd be complete, ratio is anybodies guess. I think you are lowballing the shipping, though. I'm pretty sure you'd have to truck freight that bad boy from SDakota to SDiego. $$$ E-mail me if your still interested.
Tony Sobrito 02-07-2002, 06:31 PM I got 2 quotes for shipping for around $160 ish from freight pro and forward air. So yes I was eating into your $250 a bit. The axle would have to be crated. I estimated a rectangular box 24"x24"x84" and 500 lbs total. so i guess your not tripping over it on your your garage floor where you can easily do that work.....
troutbum 02-07-2002, 08:47 PM I thought about going with a dually 14 bolt, but it seems like I would still have:
300 Gears
320 detroit
350 Disks
300 for the housing
200 for new 8 lug wheels
?? for 8 lug outers for the D44
?? New rotors/calipers for the d44
1500-1600 assuming 15" rubber will clear the 14 bolt brakes, and if not $$ for new meats. And I will still be plowing the 14 bolt pig over rocks right and left with 35" tires.
As for the t-all SF 60...the width sounds good, but is it 8 lug or 5? How hard are they to find? Still need gears/spool/disks...but definitely would be cheaper.
I think it is a shit load of money either way...and your probably right, 35 spline is enough, but unless I am a :flipoff2: DAN :flipoff2: who is really missing something it is not that much more expensive to go all new and 40 spline...
Scout Dude 02-07-2002, 09:05 PM I talked to someone about the 40 spline axle once..I think it was someone from Mark Williams. Anyway, he mentioned that 40 spline axles would not be good for rock crawling because of the side load placed upon the axles. Apparently, the bearings are not meant to handle it. May not be true, but this is what I was told. I think that we all know that 35 spline will work for sure....

... I wonder how easy it would be to convert one of those over to some Dana 60 disc brakes?
I, too, amd building a long-bed Travelette tow-rig... a '74, with the "unobtanium" front discs..
Too bad you dumped your Ranger, Matt.. you coulda brought the Dana 70 over for me in it. :-)
I hate the thought of finding a Dana 60F and having to put it under my pavement pounder...
Old Scout 02-07-2002, 09:39 PM I built my rear 60 like this:
Housing from PNP with 4:10 R&P 46.00
Torino style set 20 big bearing ends 65.00
ARB locker 650.00
Ford motorsport disc kit 275.00
Dutchman 1.5" 35 spline SF axles 350.00
Thick Dana cover 30.00
ARB install/cut down/ Jig up,weld ends 200.00
I'm doing one right now for my Rover.
oldjeep 02-08-2002, 06:42 AM Theres a couple D70 front ends on ebay right now for around $300 each. One with a passenger side drop and one with a driver drop.

I am no engineer, so help me out, how would an increase in spline count change the side load?

Damn, 200 bucks arb and the cut down?? Every place I have called (all two) said 250.00 if I wanted to stay FF 30 and 355.00 if I wanted to go SF 35 and 500.00  to go FF 35. And that was without touching the diff.
tsm1mt 02-08-2002, 10:25 AM I'm planning out my rear 60 at the moment..
I see it as...
4.10 30sp Dana 60 - free
Traded for 4.56 16sp Dana 60
I need to check if it has the big spindles or not.. then see if a machinist can make-it-so, or spend $100 in reamers..
35sp axles - ~$300
35sp Lockright - $330
Disc brake brackets - $15
8-lug rotors - $35 each (or less - I get a discount on TRW parts through work)
Chevy calipers, loaded, $60 IIRC for the pair..
Some brake hoses...
$800-ish? Ouch, that still sounds painfull..

Sure, why not! :)
A friend ran a 30sp Lockright in his F250 for a few years with zero problems. He finally got tired of broken '44 U-joints (also Lockright) and went to 5.13 HP60/D70.. both ends stuffed with Lockrights.
Still no problems.. with 42s.
When I break it, it'll be a good time to go to lower gears and the Detroit.
Or maybe I'll just find more $$$ when it comes time to order the locker..
Of course, that also means I'll need to acquire a press and an assortment of shims and...
troutbum 02-08-2002, 01:35 PM I don't know anyone who has busted a spool....;) ;)
