: Brand new welder-No gas flowing through it.-Any thoughts?

So I finally get around to wiring a 230v outlet for my brand new Lincoln SP-175plus mig welder. I get it all set up and I run a little practice bead. I notice that there isn't any gas coming through the nozzle. So I check the line pressure on the tank. Sure enough, if I close the tank valve and pull the trigger, it's not bleeding off the pressure. So I check the connection at the back of the welder. It bleeds off there when I loosen it, so I have gas into the welder. I turn the gas back on, pull the hose assembly out of the welder(leaving the leads attached) and pull the trigger. No gas coming out of the welder. I'm stumped. Anyone know a stupid mistake I might be making? If not, I guess I'm going to have to call Lincoln and go through the warranty channels, which I'm sure is going to take forever. :( All I wanted to do tonight was build a stupid cart for my new welder, dammit.

I'm pretty sure there is a solenoid that controls gas flow.

Is it plugged in?

Does it work?

Pop it open and check it out.

I don't know about you, but when "brand new" items don;t work, I TAKE THEM BACK AND GET A NEW ONE THAT DOES.

Just IMHO :p

Take off the sheet metal cover - inside directly in line with the incoming gas hose (attached right to the rearmost sheet metal) you will see the "gas solenoid" it only has two wires going to it , and it is very possible that one of them could slip off of the contact during abusive shipping!!!. These machines are all test run at the factory , and should have worked before it went out .
Lincoln employees work on a modified piece work basis WHICH also includes penalties for warranty work that is a result of them not doing their job correctly the machine can get traced back to any assembly line person whom had contact with it while it was being built - interesting but all true.
Try the solenoid , and if still nothing- well being who you are you'll know what to do!:D

Thanks for the advice. I'll check the solenoid before I go warranty. I would take it back, David, but since I bought it from "me"(I ordered it directly through lincoln), I have to call them directly, ask them who I should have the warranty work done through, generate a recipt for myself, take it to the warranty outlet, blah, blah, blah. I'd rather just get it working myself if it's something simple that I'm missing. If not, then I'll go return it to myself. While I'm at it, I'm going to give myself a piece of my mind. Sell me something that doesn't work. I'm gonna kick my ass!

My 1st thought is that it's in the mode for flux core wire. Are you using a regulator or a flow meter? I think that Lincoln electric has a forum at there web site and will answer that trouble without a bunch of warranty hassles. Don't it have a switch that opens it from gas to gas less welding? Keep us posted. I'm just not familar with that machine, mine's an old Hobart. But the Squarewave Tig 355 I have at work is all Lincoln and kicks ass!! Good luck, Ace is the place!!!

The gas solnoid is still going to flow NO MATTER what the polarity of the machine is! Otherwise how could you weld with an outersheild wire (gas sheilded-flux core)?
He also said that its a SP-175 plus which has all things required to use gas.
Hope you get it fixed Ace cuase warranty does suck to have to deal with.

Well, after a weekend of snowboarding and drinking at a two day bachelor party in Tahoe I got home this afternoon and decided I had the necessary clear, stress-free mind that I needed to deal with the welder problem. (I left it alone for three days because I was annoyed with it) So I pull some sheet metal screws out and pull away part of the cover and there is the gas solenoid with both leads firmly attached. My heart sank. But then I decided to follow the leads to see where they went. Turns out they went up to a circuit board where what did I find???? A spade terminal hanging loosely in the air!! I stuck it back on the circuit board, closed up the welder, and TA DA!! IT WORKS!! Weldpro, you are the man!! Thanks for the advice. Let the cart construction begin!
