: Locker v/s Automatic tranny
SVARAS 02-08-2002, 05:28 AM I just installed a Quick Lock to my automatic CJ7. I am concern because I don't see that the divice unlock. Actually, I 'm hearing in every corner how my tires worn out. Is this normal in automatics, due to the full time load that the sistem put in the axle????
mudtruck44 02-08-2002, 07:37 AM Here is a little secret I have found out about lockers,
they don't actually unlock very often, they affect handling, and a lot of guys don't like em.
That is why a lot of guys are going with spools or welding their diffs.
withamc 02-08-2002, 07:52 AM I have a Detroit locker in my rear D44 and an auto tranny. Unless I'm on it, it unlocks going around every corner. I used to have a Lock-Right in the rear and it was a little harsher, but it still unlocked most of the time. Automatics should have less of a driveability issue with a locker on the street than a manual tranny. Ive never seen a Quick Lock. Maybe they're cheesy, maybe you've installed it wrong.
redruM 02-08-2002, 09:22 AM quick lock is same as a lockright
this type of locker was designed for an automatic tranny
mine unlocks going arround every corner unless i get on the gas then it locks up and spins the inside tire
my guess is you are on the gas too much arround corners or have it installed incorrectly (did u remember to use your old Thrustwashers ???????????? (biggest mistake i see made)

Po' riggity 02-09-2002, 07:29 AM Im running a full detroit in my auto yj, and it unlocks when Im not on the gas going around corners.. Its common knowledge that the lunch box lockers are a bit harsher on road than say a detroit soflocker.... But if its really not unlocking around corners, something is installed wrong..

have to put 'MudTruck44' on probation for giving out secrets:flipoff2:
SVARAS...seeing as you've already got it in there....don't accelerate in corners, should help, but unless you have tires with big lugs, your going to have the stuff you descibed. If any one says they don't...then they have a broke or worn-out locker. And an auto doesn't put a full time load on anything....
H8monday 02-09-2002, 02:05 PM I run a Detroit in my 14 bolt(but Ive, also had a detroit in every axle Ive had for the last 6 years) in my YJ, but it is a manual tranny. I cant even tell its back there except for an occasional unloading when the gear oil is still cold and thick(I use synthetic Mobil 1). I have driven it on the snow covered mountain roads of Lake Tahoe, and have never had any real problems. When it does unload, it can be un-nerving, and startle the crap out of you, but it doesnt severely affect handeling that cant be corrected in a moments notice.
In my F250, I have been driving a supercharged 460 with an auto, and a detroit in the rear for 5 years. Towing, snow covered roads, Ice, etc, I cant even tell its back there except that I never have to even put it 4wd to get out of a slippery situation. I have only felt it unload maybe 10 times in the last 5 years. i dont know if its because of the 7200lb weight, or the 140" wb, but I never feel the detroit. It has a very good feel on snow covered roads, even towing.

SVARAS 02-09-2002, 02:53 PM Hey guys, thanks for all the answers. Anyway, the reason why I am concern, is because I am not pushing the gas on corners. This is not my first locker, I have been driving with lockers the last 6 years (samurai), and I can tell you that the thing is not working properly. Well, I guess I will have to reinstall it again. By the way, redrum, how was that about the old thrustwashers?????

I bent a tube, on my D35 axle (yeah, ill admit, it, I actually built up a D35), about 5 years ago. That thing used to pop and click, and unload all the time, after the damage occured. I replaced it shortly afterwards with junkyard swap, and the problem went away(same Detroit and R&P, even re used the bearings, and most of the shims).
