: Toy axle swap

After going through the search function and going through just about all the links... I have come to the conclusion that L.C. axles line up the best if you keep the sammi drivetrain. Please correct me if I got it wrong.
But what I couldn't find was what years worked best. Anyone?

oh, already considered the 78-79 waggy axles, and still might go this route, but I know where there are some cruiser axles for cheap and want to make sure they are a reasonable alternative.

Might want to carefully consider Poppy's offset Toy IFS rear - the piculp axles offer better ground clearance.

If you go with high-pinion diff's, they line up Great! :D

You've seen some of our rocks, axles pop all the time (not just my current stockers). This is for a friend that is doing a buildup, and he wants to stay with easily replaceable axle shafts - i.e. the non-custom/over the counter/easy to replace kind. He isn't very light on the go pedal...

I am reasonably sure that Poppy's axle uses the longer IFS axle on the driver's side, and a standard pre-IFS axle on the pass. side :) You'll have to ask him for sure, tho. THe L.C. axles aren't any stronger than the pickup ones, and are much harder to come by. I'm not trying to be arguementative - it's just that I am That satisfied w/ my pickup axles:cool:

heres what found about cruiser axles... the ring gear is huge. everything else is the same stength unless you get the coarse spline shafts, then it's pos :D, and i they are even narrower than a truck axle. i think 53"? smaller brakes.

if it's going in a sammy... i honestly doubt youd break a rear shaft... but anything is "possible" the ifs rear im selling uses a stock ifs shaft on the long side. the pass. was cut down 3" and resplined. it is 1.5" shorter than the early rear axle shafts. from my eyeballing it, i dont see it happening. :D

Do me a favor and send me some pix and prices so I can pass them on. This guy saw Tims rig when he was here in December and now wants to build something extreme with the sammi he just picked up.;)
Damn lucky fool picked up an almost (no engine) complete sammi w/title for $300...

I've just got done with my toyota axle conversion (See Pic here) (http://imagehost.auctionwatch.com/preview/fi/fireman131/feb9.JPG) And would like to know more about this other axle you are talking about! Please send me some pic's and prices to my e-mail address (fireman131@earthlink.net) Thanks!

Brian here's the idea in a nutshell: you take a Toyota IFS rear axle (3" wider than the straight-axle rear) and you shorten the passenger side axle tube. If you shorten it ~1.5", you should be able to use a stock S.A. axle shaft for cheap & easy replacement. Or you could shorten the pass. side however much you wanted & have the stock axle shaft shortened & re-splined. I've done it on a Ford rear, and Poppy's got a Toy version.

Tim, I seen his post at the bottom of the list after I posted this one! thanks for the idea! Might be something to think about later down the road!

I am doing something similar to this, but taking it a little farther. I'm using full-floating Toyota hubs and will be moving the chunk over even farther :grinpimp:

Help educate a newbie...

Wouldn't a CV driveshaft address the issue of compound angles when using a centered Toy p/u axle? If so, isn't this cheaper than offsetting an axle?

It does and it is but if ya got the means...... FWIW I was doing 65 for about ten miles of highway, Claws at 12psi on Sunday, man those things can howl! Anyway I had no vibes at all, it was :smokin:

Sometimes a CV style shaft will cause more vibs then a normal shaft! Its all in how you have your rear diff, if it is pointed right at the t-case then you shouldn't have any problems, but if it is down a little bit, then a CV shaft might be handy!
I have a friend with yota's and he said the CV shaft he had gave him more vibs then a normal shaft, go figure??? :rasta:

Yes the CV shaft will work (it's what I got now).
BUT it doesn't align those chunks....:D

it's all about lining those chunks up. ;)

Yeah, the chunk lining up thing, like they said. That's the ticket!:smokin:
