I should have it welded on in the next couple days. I have it right where I need it.. I just gotta there welder to the house. Only thing I don't like is the engine is not as far back as I would like. But I am not going to cut and re-weld the mount for 2". The chassis fit perfectly. with about 1/2" frame sticking out the front and rear. Also Ill need to box the ends (frame horns)for support. The rear axle will be moved later to center it in the rear portion of the chassis. And to extend the wheel base to about 103". That puts the axle just behind the rear cross member. Which will be used to mount the top coil retainer and shock mounts. right now the front has a 5" lift and the rear sits slightly lower than stock. SO the rear will be raised from its current position by almost 4".

cool idea, seems like with the chassis why not just make a buggy, but i guess its cheaper then getting a good cage done anyways. And who likes to follow the bandwagon i know i dont. Nice to be how you want it to be cant wait to see some skins on it. It will be pimp

Okay, I don't mean any disrespect, but why? I just don't get it. Why not just move everything into a buggy and save the weight? Since you're gonna cut up the frame anyway(or I would), why not just lose the frame and swap everything into a full buggy chassis. Are you planning on using the EB skins and stuff and basically "bob" the front and rear.
What are you plans for the rest?

I think whatever works.
For a full on buggy he would have to deal with making mounts for everything.
This is ready to rock and roll for half the truck. Oh and you might could get away with making this street legal too.

Well, that is true. I'd be curious how the DMV in Texas would look at it too.

I don't know about Tx, but here I bet I could pull it off.
He says he will use the skins. The only thing that may give him trouble would be the windshield.

its going to be street legal. The title says its a 74 bronco and I have ever thing I need to make it legal. front and rear lights, horn, brakes, blah blah blah...
Skins Will only cover the small sides and the engine. Covering the engine is mostly for when it sits in the driveway. To keep the rain off the wiring.
As for the chassis. This is a toy class chassis. Its not the X chassis. The X has the lower frame replacement. The cost is what kept me from going full chassis. I don't need to cut any thing off the frame. The frame is 1" longer than the chassis (1/2" in the front and rear). The only thing that needs to be done to make it work, is moving the rear axle back a minimum of 10". other than that its a perfect fit.
here are the specs on the Hendrix chassis.
hope ya don't mind David...

GRRR I hate ya! Just when I say no more projects, you come along!! Already got a pretty nice almost finished 72 bronco with a 351, 5" lift, 4.88s and 35" boggers. Almost too nice to beat up.
BUT..... I know where theres a frame with diffs and the D20 for 400 CDN and some others want the diffs so easily could get the frame and D20 for under 75 USD then go full width 60s and 42s.

like many of yall, my build up is determined by over time and my ability to save. Both of which have been a bit lacking. :D
My plans were not to paint it till the frame and all the brackets were done. But lack on funds, the last couple weeks, have left me with very little to do. Not wanting to lose interest, I decided to start paint it. The painting is about 75% done.
2 weeks ago, I almost scored a set of 39" boggers on rims. But my friend needed them to move his blazer. So next weekend Ill be ordering a new set of rims. And putting some 33" tire on to be able to roll it.
Work is on hold till next weekend :D
lil update-Moving has slowed down progress a lot.
leaf spring are gone. It sits at 113" WB. Now its too long, so Ill have to shorten it.
5.0/C4/D20 are mounted
decided to go with a 14Bolt

Here are pics of the way it sits today. I cut off the stock brackets. I am going with coil overs. They are sitting on the back on the buggy I think. I still need to do a little grinding where the brackets were. I mocked up the front hummer rims to see how they would look. I don't feel like doing shit without a compressor. :flipoff2:

haven't done any work last 2 days (work). But here are a few pics I took 2 days ago. I removed the old 5 lug hubs and disk to give away. But I had to move the buggy away from the wall. So I used a furniture dolly and my engine hoist. I decided to go ahead and clean the new knuckle and replace the ball joints. Every thing else will go back together the way it is, till I get the gears installed. I also need to swap the PS pump pulley

well she lost her fat ass today
I stared today by test fitting the fuel cell. I couldn't decide whether to put it on the frame or make it level with the top of the rear section.

I needed to mock the fuel to find out how high I could allow the rear axle to flex. For that I need to mock up the control arm brackets and control arms. After doing that I found the stock crossmemebr was in the way (bad).

well I didn't get much done over the weekend. I caught up on some much needed fishing. I worked on the buggy last night trying to get the floor frame work. Then pulled a pretty good drunk and didn't work on the buggy any more. Today I joined the C6 to the 203 I picked up several months ago. Looked good. But then I had to take the 203 apart to get the shaft ready to send in for work. BTW that was a pain in the a$$. I'm going to clean up the 205 and have it read for when the doubler kit shows up. few pics of the day. really boring stuff though.

The pics kinda blurry. But I took some 1X4 and drill the holes with a hole saw. Then drilled some hole through the 1X4 into the rafters. And used some 3" wood screws to hold it up. On the other end I used finishing nails and rubber bands to hole them up. I never finished the other side. Its hanging on the walls. But there are some notches (J) cut in to the 1x4. I need to finished it up. Too many small projects. We moved in 7 months ago and I am still putting things up.
This was before I hung my shelves.

Been working the last couple days. Not much to report. The cross bracing for the rear is what I have been doing after work. Most of it is tacked into place. But I am still grinding out the X supports for strength. The tube notchers are a little out of my price range. So I cut everyone out with a portable band saw. The fit them with an angle grinder.
Parts ordered in the last week.
38.5X15 Swamper Boggers- These were actually the cheapest tires out of the ones I had to chose from.
hummer rim o-ring- 14.25"
Staz Works insert- 5 HDPE inserts for 16.5" hummer rims. Ill have to wait for the rock rings. I want a nice set of rock rings. There is no way Ill weld rebar to this rig.

Any pics of your scout? What axle ya got? I would have liked to find a Scout d44 for the knuckle and spindles. Actually a friend gave me a Scout. But it had the D30. I sold the whole thing to the bone yard for $20. On top of that I had to drop it off.
I am still waiting on my double adaptor from NWF. I couldnt belive it would take 4 weeks.

But I finially rebuilt the 203 and the 205. Cleaned them up and painted them. I hade a little time yesterday, so I put the "doubler" adaptor on. I need this to see where to mount the seat. Then I found out my $265 tripple shift wont work. Well not without several hours of simple modification.(read more work).
So now I know where all 4 seats are going to mount. I started the rear mounts a while back. But decided not to get too far ahead of my self, so I stopped. Glad I did the rear output of the transfer case is about 6" from the feet of the rear passangers.

Nothing you can see very well. Mostly support tubing and rear coilover mounts. I started the axle truss yesterday. The arms should be done by the end of the week. 48" for the bottom and 45" for the tops.
I really need to figure out how I am going to deal with the TRE hitting the H1 rims. 1.5" spacer seems the easy (read cheap) way to go. I really don't wanna pour much money into the D44. I hope to upgrade to a D60 before it hits the road.

I hit it with some primer to keep the rust down till I get it sand blasted and painted. Its going to be red not orange.

cleaned the garage today and moved the axle under the buggy to get it out of the way. NO those aren't the coilover mounts, they are for visual purposes only :flipoff2: But that's where they are going. I am using schedule 40 pipe for the seat belt mounts, front and rear.

I got a lot done on my last 7 days off. :sorry: no pics yet. I have the front pedal area mostly done. The front and rear fender are in place. I also added a receiver hitch to the rear. The seat belt cross sections are in place. The flooring is about all the tubing work I have left in the cab area.
I started mocking up the Borla exhaust system. Its gunna be tight, but I am going to try and squeeze it under the fuel cell. The battery(s ?) will go between the exhaust in the middle of the frame. Optima, most likely.
I am really NOT looking forward to moving the front axle. Ill have to remove the coil mounts and trac bar mount, then reweld them. The radius arm mounts will be moved back about 4"-6". the axle will go forward about 4"-6". I really don't want to move it. But the tires hit the corner of the Hendrix chassis when I turn them.
Bad news, I found out the "bad ass" headers I bought wont work. Ill have to sell them and find some others. Or go with stock 302 manifolds. I kinda like the idea of stockers. It will lower my power bad. The motor ran bad ass. But it was in a Mustang. I don't need the power band up in the 4K range.

Damn nice project, those chassis are alot of bang for the buck.
It's good to see you taking care of the snags as they come up, like the front axle placement, rather than just living with the compromise.:smokin:
Considering that you have to hang pedals, build a dash, seat mounts, etc, etc, do you still feel like this was a time saver compared to a fullout buggy?
I know how all these little finishing details can add up and wear ya out but have you got a target date for completion that you're shooting for?
Looks good man.
Nickm
02-14-2006, 01:00 AM
Compliments keep me going, thanks.
Wished I could say it was a time saver to go this route. Yeah, I guess ya could save a few hour not buying a complete chassis. With a complete chassis I would have had to make all the engine mounts and front supports. Actually, I would be a lot farther along if I stopped changing my mind. Recently I decided to find a D60 and sell all the D44 parts, Ill roll on the D44 till I pick up a D60.
All of my notches and done with an agle grinder. I dont have a tubing notchers. Damn that would be nice. What takes me 2 hours per tube would tkae 3 minutes.
The easy way would have to gone the hick, farm-all way. Ya know saw-zall and tractor implements. Nothing wrong with that, I just don't wanna do that here.
The chassis route will give me every thing I want. At the cost of keeping me off the trail for about 2 years. I can still ride shot gun with friends, till I get mine done.
Snags I have come across (so far):
The axle WILL have to be moved forward
The 5.0 headers hit the frame
The rear 4 link would hit the rear cross member
Ya have to remember, the chassis is only the skeleton. Ya still need to create the entire inside. Firewalls, floor, fuel cell supports, triangulation supports, skins, the list goes on........ The only thing ya save by going this route is, ya get a skeleton to start with. Thats motivation to get ya started.
Really, I made it harder than it had to be, but in the end it will be worth it.
I could have used every thing from the early Bronco (motor, transmissio, transfer case, and axles). The only thing early Bronco now is about 5' of frame and the radiator. And Ill probably replace the radiator due to the new water pump (wrong side).
humm, target date? some time this year I hope to wheel it. I really dont have much left. gear install, steering and brakes. OK maybe early next year. PIcs are not up to date.

Ive been working on getting all my D44 stuff sold. I picked up a D60 and stuffed it under the buggy. Now I have to redo the entire front suspension.

well after several month of over time I finally had a chance to get back to work on the buggy. The D60 had been under the buggy just sitting. I had the buggy lowered to see how far forward Ill need to move it. Its looking like about 6" to fit 39s. But I actually plan on 44s at some point. So Ill move it a little farther. To fix the problem of my rims hitting the steering arms, I bought a set of dually hub. I have plenty of room to spare. I went ahead and shoved the pig back under the buggy. I am going to weld up the control arms bracket I made sometime this week.
enough rambling. Here are some pics.

Not every thing is tacked into place. I need to double check every thing; and measure every thing a second time before I tack the frame brackets.

Changed the rear again. I still plan on longer coil overs on the end of the truss. I am going to weld in the tip of the truss later this week. I also started the trac bar mount and support for my steering ram.

Its a jeep thing? who cares? :flipoff2: I got a Ford
I have it together with 3 small c-clamps. I have a center section I need to braze in.

Any updates on your project recently? I just bought a somewhat completed Bronco Buggy and need to get some ideas about the skins. I'm from a little town in NE Texas close to Longview.

Actually, yeah.
I finished the fuel cell mount and started running the fuel tubing. Its all 316SS.
I have the front steering ram mount done. I just need to mount it to the axle. I have to make my short steering arms first.
The flooring for the rear in done, up to thefront edge of the front seat.
I also did the firewall and figured out where my gauges are going. I am going to use the gauge from the mustang. But I am going the mount them on the center on the dash. Which BTW I did last week also. I need to make some sort of small dome/housing to put the gauges in. That should be very easy, maybe a small fiber glass housing. Then bolt it to the dash.
I have patterns for the top of the fenders and the sheet metal for them. But I haven't cut them yet. But for the side I think I am going with diamond plate. I am buying stuff that I need to get it running right now. So it may be early next year before I get the sides and inner fender walls in.
Ill and get some pix next weekend. Ill be busy for the next couple of say. But I plan on putting in some hour this weekend.
Longview? The company I work for has a plant there.
AirLiquide. There is a guy who works at that plant who is running a 1/2 Dodge with a Ford D60 ion the front and a 4 link suspension. Its a pretty nice ride. I haven't had much time to talk with him, maybe you've run across him. Its a green Dodge though.

Thanks Chuck.
I have made a few changes in my plans. I was going to run the stock Ford Radius arms but I changed my mind and bought some more 2" DOM just like the rear. I am going to copy my rear and do a 4 link front. I couldn't shell out the $450 for 4 more EVO ends, so I am going with 1.25 QA1 I picked up from a friend.
I got most of my front brackets last week from polyperformence. I mounted the rear coilovers. All I need now is my front mount tabs. They should be here in the morning. Then fab some top front mounts and she should roll.
side note: I am also working on a goose neck trailer for the buggy at the same time. Most of the frame work is done. I actually have a load on it now. But I need to add some more crossmembers and the flooring.
pics to come later.
I am working slowly on fixing the pic links :flipoff2:

I have my front bottom arms set up now. :smokin:
Now I am going to take my ram mount and cut of the flat plate. Then face the mount upward (truss) and add this bracket.
http://bluetorchfab.com/store/images/largeLMS.jpg
It matches my rear.
Then I am going to reweld the flat plate facing forward. Kind of like this.
http://bluetorchfab.com/store/images/FORD%2060%20FRONT%20TRUSS%20W%20RAM%20MOUNT_POP.jp g
Except my truss is tubing. Then I can buy the diff ring and/or cover with the tab to support the truss.
Here is my "un"finished ram mount.
http://www.txwheelers.com/12310-2/picture+197.jpg
Ill weld the flat plate facing forward and the bracket on the other side and bolt it to the diff ring.
Here are the top frame mounts

Any update on this build?
