Hope this is not too much of a noob question (if so flame on) but: I have a 80 that is getting a IH 345, 727, 20. I know the stock axels are basically junk and I am looking at a swap. Beside the spring perches how would a 70's Chevy Dana 44 1/2 ton line up under a Scout 80? I can't physical look at them at this time but I think for $50 each (complete) it would be a good deal if they will work.
Thanks
Erik

Do a search under "full size axles". This has been covered MANY times. There was a good thread with many pictures a couple of weeks ago. The Chebby 1/2 ton stuff is about 9-10" wider than your stockers (that can also be adjusted with wheel backspacing to a certain extent). As you mentioned, the spring perch width is different. Chebby axles are also spring over as well.

Tried the search first.... got so many responses coulnd't find shit to do with IH. Took another look after your response and realized I didn't see the advanced button. Still didn't find the thread you are talking about but I did find some info. I will look some more for the thread w/pics.
Lesson learned.

If the width is and issue, they are easy to narrow. Many of us run cut-down chevy axles.
The bolt pattern is different than Scout, but if you run a 6-lug rear axle its not an issue. Or its easy enought to change (again, search fodder, has even been discused in the last couple weeks).
Chevy never ran a D44 rear, so the rear will probably be 10 bolt GM Corprate or more likely a 12-Bolt.
