: how bad of an idea is this (fuel related)
Turbo6justin 02-08-2002, 04:37 PM Okay I am in the middle of the rear fender stretching operation on my XJ and I have run into one problem. After moving the inner fender well back 8" (I cut it in half and am going to make a filler piece for the middle much like brent orton) I can finally make the inner fender well the 38-39" that I want it to be. In order to do this I need to move the fuel filler neck and cap assemble. I have a quite simple way to do this but the question is how bad of an idea is it to have the filler cap in the car? The system is obviousely pressurized and the cap is designed to keep that under check, I filled up the neck with water and it does not leak at all. I pressurized it with air and it did not leak. It is a trail only rig and I realize that when I fill up the tank there will be vapors but other than that can I do this. Basically I see no other place to put the darn thing.
Sorry long winded,
Oh yeah I did a search and found nothing except relocating it in another place on the outside of the vehicle.
JeepDaddy 02-08-2002, 04:41 PM Not a good idea. In a roll, it could start leaking. Safety First!

There might be obvious reasons the search didn't cover placing a highly noxious, toxic, unstable bomb in your car. Umm, I had at one time considered having a filler inside but have you noticed that over the several decades of auto manufactureing not one has ever put the filler in the car. There might be a good reason for this.
Basically, I'd say try anything else before doing this. At the very least you could end up :rasta: or even :skull: on the other extreme.
Turbo6justin 02-08-2002, 07:23 PM In theory I know this seams like a bad idea, but why is what is killng me. Lots of enclosed cars, one of mine included has a fuel cell in the trunk or hatch area. and I have a few books here that discuss various Auto tech topics and they all make reference to the fuel system being a closed system. So I realize this could end up bad, but then again a NO2 system or even exchanging an oxy/accetaline (SP?) set could be real bad and plenty of people do it.
and on a funny note Belly Dragger, if auto manufactures are so great why did the infamous pinto designers make the trunk floor the top of the gas tank (great in an accident) and similarily the 60's I believe ford P-up's had the gas tank behind the front seats?

Nope wasn't implying that the auto industry was full of geniuses but you still won't find one with a filler on the inside.
dirtrod 02-08-2002, 07:32 PM I put mine in the wheelwell, kinda awkward with a gas can, but it's simple and works.
Nothing wrong with questioning conventional wisdom, but here's a couple things to consider. First, what's the weakest spot in a gas tank i.e. where is it going to rupture if you get rear-ended real bad? Might be the filler cap, might not be, I don't know, but if it is the filler cap that might be why it's always outside. Second, since its pressurized, and the pressure dissapates (sp) slowly when you turn it off, you might fill the inside with fumes whenever you stop for gas. Third, even a slight pressure leak (even if you don't have one now) is gonna make the inside smell bad. Fourth, they'll probably call the cops on you at the gas station when they see you open the door and climb in with the gas nozzle.
dawhipp 02-09-2002, 06:22 AM Hey didn't the pre '67 VWs have the fuel filler in the front trunk. Geez, good thing they only made a few of them.
I'ld consider running the filler hose through the cab to the outside. Gas really stinks nowadays. Diesel fuel smell much nicer.:rasta:

it was never a recall or fixed so it ain't all that bad hu?:flipoff2:
Cutter 02-09-2002, 01:33 PM go for it....the factory puts caps on the out side for easier gas station visits. As long as you don't have a vented cap, it's safe. don't y'all people remember the gas fed heaters in old volkswagens and such?
On a trail only rig, I say go for it. (street rigs have to meet laws)
mytzlflick 02-09-2002, 03:50 PM I would say no, try routing it up higher? either to the top of the fender cutout or the roof ar something, if the cap ever shakes loose when full you would have fuel everywhere. remember the system may seem sealed but fuel vapors do escape, leave it sitting for a week in the hot sun and then get in with a lit cigarrette and its game over.
Turbo6justin 02-09-2002, 04:38 PM mytzlflick- I think that if the cap every comes off no matter where it is anyone of us would have problems.
Anyway, I went back to working on the heep today and took the collective advice and found a better way to do it. The rubber hose will still run through the cab but it will be boxed in so nothing can touch it. And the filler itself is basically in the stock location, some bracket bending, new holes and a lot of sawzalling and it is in there.
I am also getting closer to getting my rear fender well project done, as it sits now I have almost 40 inches of inner fender width and this is on an XJ, It should swallow those 38.50 SX's pretty well... hehe
thanks for the advice!
brutus 02-09-2002, 04:58 PM Get rid of the fuel tank and have someone tow you through the Rubicon Safety First:D
Go Propane Like Lances rig has.
