Just a little tip for those struggling to get to events as the price of deisel has gone so high. No, this is not an ad, Becca just thought people might appreciate knowing this.

We have always had a CitiBank card but last year Becca found there is a type of card called the Citi Divident Platinum Select Card that gives you 5% cash back on purchases made at gas stations and supermarkets. On every other purchase the return is only 1% so we use the cards exclusively for groceries and gas. You can only get $300 cashback each year so we keep track of totals and when we reach $6000 charged, we cancel the card and get a new one, starting the balance over if you get the right person on the line when doing it. We charged $15,000 so far this year and have received $750. Another way to look at it is you will save about 13 cents per gallon right now (depending on where you live).

Don't know if someone found anything better but if so, we'd like to know about it. We were not interested in air miles so we found this to be the best.

If you're interested in this card, you can get an application by calling 1-800-456-4277. Again, this is no ad, we're just trying to help on those gas costs.

Dustin,

Being one of the little guys trying to get into this sport it is suggestions like this that help. I would have never in a million years thought of anything like this, and while I don't like credit cards I have been thinking having one while traveling is a good idea. I will definitly look into.

Why the cancel and restart at $6000?

RedBullJeep
12-15-2004, 02:14 PM
Because they have a maximum of $300 cash back for the year. 5% of $6k is $300. Once we rech that maximum, we cancel and restart to be able to keep taking advantage of this great deal. First time goes under her name as primary, second time my name as primary, and so on...works good and we're savin some $.

Great idea, but I am concerned about the overall effects...
But doesn't the cancelling the card and then opening new accounts so often (you have had 3 new accounts on your names so far this year) really fubar your credit scores? I would think so... just as it does when you have to cancel cards due to loss or theft (yeah, you get screwed twice when that happens).
Just concerned.

good point, I'll have to ask about that. We have amazing credit so I'm not sure. Still, even if you just do it for the first $300, saving $.13 per gallon helps when your doing so many towing miles at 8 to 13 MPG.

Sunoco has a card where you get 4% back with no limit. Its the mastercard one here.

I think BP/Amoco has one thats about the same % also, but their site isn't working for me right now.

Its a little more of a pain since you have to go to certain stations, and 1% less but you aren't canceling and opening accounts so much then. You could even use be both, just use the sunoco or BP when you can and then the other non specific one when you have too, so you don't reach their limit so quick. Just another option.

Dustin, the best way to find out if it is hitting your credit is to order a copy of your reports. Make sure that you get a merged record of all three bureaus.
My wife and I also have excellent credit, but it is partly because we keep close track of our reports. We have found a few mistakes over the years, which could have hurt us if we weren't so diligent.
Hijack over, never wanted to in the first place.
Another good way to earn money to compete is to do what you love, outside of your day job. Even if it is as gay as planting flowers for the neighbors. If it earns ya money, and you like doin it, go for it. Many big companies started out like this, too... take a look at ebay's beginnings. Can anyone say garge sale?

I dunno about garage sales...but I've seen Dustin have a couple of "yard sales" at the competitions! :flipoff2: Just kidding with ya Dustin!

Actually, that credit card deal sounds great. Hmmm, I spend about $25K on fuel per year. I might need to sign up friends as well. I could save about $1250 a year! That's a new set of Krawlers just in time for X-mas.

they are at least as far south as kentucky, so for many Uroc east guys and Neuroc guys its an option.

But if there isn't any of them by you then get the Bp/Amoco one or find another that give a discount.

I know alot of you guys camp. But for those who stay at hotels, make sure you sign up for their rewards programs (there free). I'm signed up with several programs, but mostly use www.goldcrownclub.com and www.triprewards.com. Much like Air miles, You earn points for each stay and you can cash in points for free rooms/food/services. I figure I have enough points from last years business trips for 2 weeks of free hotel rooms. It's really nice when you get elevated in status too, because you receive nice perks like early check-in, late check-out (4:00 pm), & free room upgrades.

Not sure if there is a limit or not.

We did that last year. Aarons (Neuroc #609 Driver) g/f works for Sunoco, so we use that card that gets a small discount. those few % add up over a season.

If your driving in enough comps and your not in a related business (4x4 shop ect.). Think about making your team a business (home based) or if your in business, CFN and Pacific Pride are pretty easy to get cards from. The stations are everywhere and open 24 hours. You'll save about 10-20 cents a gallon, and the more you buy the better the deal gets. Just another option to look at. Pepdaddy

Another card to look at is the american express card from Costco. They give you 3% back when you eat out at restrausts 2% back on travel expences (near as I can tell it just means hotels airline tickets and rental cars) and 1% back everywhere else.

I use the citibank card dustin is talking about for gas and grocery store purchases, Then I use the american express at restraunts and hotels. I also have a discovercard that I get cash back on as well.

I work for Sunoco also, but because I am in the midwest, I get no discounts :(
Sunoco also has a contract with Wal-mart in the East. So look in the super center parking lots for Sunoco fuel.
