Hey Just wanted to add to the mayhem and ask some questions!
I have been thinking of refitting my 40 with a Ranger torque splitter(for 27% overdrive!) and a SM465/3spd t-case for low end grunt! I allready have the V8 and a TH350 /3spd, but what I really want is overdrive!
Has anybody done this swap? Advance Adapters say's that the Ranger locate's the engine so there is no need for driveline mods but I don't see how, here is the measurment of each component.
GM bell houseing ?"
Ranger t/s 7.5"
SM465 12"
Classic Cruisers adapter for 3spd t-case 1"
3spd t-case 5"
Any body know how much shorter the V8 is vs the I6, or how long the bell houseing is?
Seems like this assy is long maybe even longer than what I'm running now.
Any info would be great,
Thanks,
-Scott

I know of someone who used the same setup except he has a Advance Adapter from the 465 to t-case. (ie-longer)
His 40 is stretched quite a bit front and rear, but he did have the same setup in it in an earlier, shorter (but not stock) length.
He loves having the Ranger cause he likes going fast.
I can try to find some pics of it if you would like.
I know he swears by the Ranger and would never get rid if it. He just loves it.

One of my cruiser friends had this similar setup in his FJ40. He had a 327,ranger underdrive,sm420,Warden adaptor,3-speed Toyota T/C. Your setup will be the same other than your tranny being a few inches longer. We had to move the rear tubular crossmember back some, but other then that, everything worked fine. I don't remember the rear driveshaft length, but it wasn't too short.
I am running a 350 with 350 auto in my 40. The 350 auto is longer than the settup I mentioned above.

Scott,
I wouldn't recommend this. I'd go with a NV4500. I have a Ranger I'll let you drive it. They are spendy and you are adding more links in the driveline. Fewer links=simpilier=better. How they say no driveline changes is they push the 350 forward in your engine bay. You'll understand if I open my hood.

I had a ranger in my M715 with a poncho 455 and sm465 with divorced np200. I did not like the ranger o/d and would not buy one again. It added a lot of slop(I think because of the internal gear tolerances(normal) coupled with the slop inculded in the design of the input shaft spline coupler.) Also it made the tranny much harder to shift due to the tranny synchros having to work with the extra inertia of the gears in the o/d. I am going NV4500 now.
The NV4500/V-8 in my FJ40 has the shifter in nearly the stock location and the engine sits exactly where I wanted, with plenty of room for the largest rev rotation fan I could find(19") rear driveshaft is 2" shorter than stock...

If you are seriously looking at Ranger overdrive to go in front of your SM465, give me a shout as I may have one up for sale shortly.

Changed my mind I am going with a SM420, it' 1.5" shorter and has a lower first gear!
Do the 420 and the 465 have the same imput shaft/bolt pattern?

I will measure the index shaft on the overdrive on the one that I have and see which tranny it's for. I always under the impression that they were the same for both trannies. Well I guess I was wrong and come to think of it the original owner told me it was behind an SM420... Well I'll measure to make sure!
