inside the birf itself, moly

for the trunions and such, marine

I'm too lazy to fill the damn opening full, prefer to do a 2-3x a year repack instead....

FSM says Moly. I use Amsoil Synthetic Moly (purple) although I'm going to try their waterproof (blue) Moly. But 80s see a lot more wear than a 40, 55, 60, 62 etc... with the fulltime 4wd. I used Redline in the past and will never do that again. Expensive and I didn't like how it performed.

I always use Synthetic Sombrero on department meeting days. :flipoff2: Otherwise I use Gray Moly. I guess the parts came in eh?

I used to use Napa brand high temp grease when I had birfields. Napa grease/oils are made by Valvoline. Buy them in the 5 lb. tubs.

Make that 3 of us. I use it as well and change it out 1-2 times a year on the trail w/ the birf.

Is this an exercise in futility? Has anyone on this board ever actually worn out a birf? (not you Mark SWB), I'm thinkin' that the poll should be changed to "easiest to clean up after while doing a trailside birf change grease". Or maybe "grease requiringing the least changing of AIDS gloves and smallest roll of paper towels while doing a trailside birf change". I think if it's slippery and gooey and comes in a tub, it'll work fine for birfields. Especially for these folks that CHANGE? birfield grease bi-annually!!

Is this an exercise in futility?...
lol

I suppose it at least makes a difference with regard to how well the grease stays "solidified," grease wise. When I first bought my 40, I made the mistake of pumping the birf full of high temp disc brake grease (dino). You know, 'cause it has disc brakes. Everytime I drove it, the grease heated up some and leaked like a sieve. :shaking: Live and learn.:D

I know you are suppose to run moly grease in the birf and non moly in the bearings. I could not find the part numbers Dan ( Dan Dan the Cruiser parts man on IH8MUD) suggested to me at 4 diff parts stores. So I bought Mobil 1 for both the Birfs and Bearings. Any one see anything wrong with using that in both? Its a non Moly type of red synth gease.
