: Gearbox Overheat error message.
4.6 RR 12-16-2004, 11:43 AM I just completed rebuilding 2002 4.6 RR. I have one problem to which I cannot seem to find the solution. Onboard computer keeps displaying the GEARBOX OVERHEAT message. Transmission shifts fine in both modes, there is no leaks or any disconnected wires…
Did anybody have come across this before, would this mean that this is a time to visit Land Rover dealer.
Any thoughts, help, ideas would be appreciated.
Old Scout 12-16-2004, 12:15 PM Have you checked the sender for the proper ohm reading?
64rovr 12-16-2004, 01:43 PM not really helping you, but why would you have to "rebuild" an '02 Range Rover? it should still be under warranty unless it has a million miles on it. or, it was totalled and you bought it as is, which makes me question your sanity in the first place...
but yes, check the sensor and the sensor wiring, to be sure everything is working properly.
2002 Range Rovers don't have a transmission dipstick, correct?
pokeyYJ 12-16-2004, 04:48 PM correct, no dip stick
porbably needs to be hooked to a T4 to clear the faults in the trans ECU
4.6 RR 12-17-2004, 06:07 AM I purchased the 2002 RR from salvage car yard it was hit in the front, car had 18000 miles on it. That is the reason for rebuilding.
I have OBD-2 PC type interface scanner purchased from www.OBD-2.com it has manufacturer defined code library for Land Rover but I don’t think it can interface with transmission CPU. Is there any tool I can buy which will enable me to interface with the transmission control module? Or only dealer will be able to do that?

Only a dealer or a specialist independent. Autologic, Rovacom, Rovacom-lite and T-4 are all capable of reading, interpreting and clearing such codes.
But, based upon the purchase price of your vehicle, it might be less expensive to have a dealer look at it, otherwise, you'd have at least 10% of the purchase price tied up in the test method.
M concern would be that the transmission overheated as a result of the crash.
You may be in for more than you bargained for.
But, have faith, I have a similar vehicle in a similar situaiton scheduled for work this spring.
Peace,
PT
4.6 RR 12-17-2004, 11:10 AM Indeed the RR scanners are no cheap. I did some searches and was able to find a couple of places which are selling the tools, but only Coventry West has price shown on their website. Omitec T4 Hand-Held Diagnostic Tool sells for $2195.00
I hate giving my cars in stealers (dealers) hands but I guess I will have to do that.
evilfij 12-17-2004, 08:44 PM Sometimes land rover is an idiot and does not mark the warranty on salvage cars. Might want to call and check to see if it is still good.

I wish that was all I had tied up in mine :flipoff2:
4.6 RR 12-20-2004, 11:10 AM What exactly you are talking about.
Sparkwood 12-20-2004, 11:54 AM Contact your local delaer and ask about a price for a 1 hour diagnostic session on the vehicle. I'm a service advsior for a UK dealer and offer this to people that wouldnt usually come to us. Often its possible to spend some time going through all the fault codes through out the vehicle, give them print outs of everything and explain what needs to be done to sort it. Over here I charge approx 88UKP plus VAT for it. Maybe worth asking.
Second point, again it may well be different there, but over here if the vehicle is still on its original ID (ie still has its correct VIN) and is with in warranty parameters (ie less than 3 years old, but that is so flexable its a joke) then accident damage makes no difference. Again follow this option as it may well save you a lot of time and money.

88 pounds? I charge $55 for an hour of diagnostic time!

I have just short of $5k in my Rovacom-lite. Buying just the functions you need is the way to buy such a device, especially in your case.
pendy 12-21-2004, 08:08 PM From what I understand, This HHT4 can do light programing. Very good for Bosch and Gems engine diagnosis. Can do P38 air suspension and programing. TD5 diesel. Alarm programing on late model. No P38 HVAC. The dealership boys I have talked with are very happy with it. Moreso then many Rovacom lite customers I speak with. Their are other function available on it as well.
Thanks for posting this link to the Coventry sales promotion. I did not think it was available seperate from the full T4.
I may pony up.
