Ok I have searched till I am blue in the face and I can't find shit.
Here is what I have:
YJ with 4.0 & AW4 from 1996 XJ using the engine harness from the XJ. It all works great and runs like a top.
What I want to know:
If I swap the AW4 out for a manual trans what do I need to do to make the ECM happy? I know I need the CPS on the bell housing. What I am more interested in is what happens when the TCM is removed and the ECM can't talk to it? What kind of data is sent between the two over the CCD bus? As far as I can tell that is the only connection between the two.

I ran a 1994 4.0 with AW4 in my XJ.. I rolled the XJ and put the 4.0 in my CJ with the complete harness minus the TCM and the AW4. I had the 4.0 mated to a NP435. The only thing that was needed was the CPS. I had no ill effects of running the motor with the complete harness minus the trans. In fact, It made it a 5 wire swap.
Why do you want to change? I am actually going back to an auto for my new comp rig.

I put a 96 4.0 into my TJ, this motor came from a cherokee and the ECM from an auto cherokee. I put an ax-15 behind it and have a problem where the damn thing stalls when I engine brake, then push the clutch in. If I give it gas it will do fine, if I clutch before letting it engine brake it does fine. Anyone got a clue as to what is happening? :)

Damn I always forget about NAXJA. Did some searching over there, and that lead me to some pretty good info. From what I found the computer will throw a code about not being able to talk to the TCM but it will not affect the way the motor runs.
As for why, maybe cause I get bored with the auto on the trail, I'm not sure. My friend just swapped a 435 into his CJ and I love the way it works for him. I keep going back and forth on what I want to do. The AW4 will probably stay for a while since I am broke as fuck.
Peran, I would have to agree with rocksteady. I am not exactly sure why that would cause it to die but one of the first places I would start is making sure you have a VSS signal to the computer. You may also want to check your idle air motor. It might be that it is sticking and can't adjust fast enough to keep the engine running.

Thanks both of you, will see bout checking those 2 things soon as the snow leaves the ground ;) I've learned to live with it, just tap the gas with the side of my foot whenever I clutch.

Sorry, been a while but have a quick question. It's cold out and I haven't had much time to really check this thing out but if I have a working speedo, from the donor vehicle, would that mean I have a working VSS sensor? Also, how do I check the idle air motor?
