DILLINGER

Not all of the mods you carry has to be offroad oriented. Fire extinguishers just climbed to the top of my list on every rig I own.....
If you smell fuel....find out why!
It was a moderately warm day in Maryland ....unusual for February...so I was headed to the NAPA store for high steering components and the Jeep stealership next to it to pick up the O-ring kit because I had detected the smell of fuel in the last day or so.(This is ironic....as I'll now explain).
I lost the DILLINGER/STRYKER today at 09:30 in front of that dealership. I am now thankful that I purchased the two fire extinguishers last month.
Strong fuel smell and then a pop. I instinctively pulled the hood latch exactly then.....but it came away dead. I carry a very large prybar in the rig, and was finally able to get the hood open by sacrificing the right fender and my right hand. Along with some second degree burns, I was able to dump both extinguishers onto the concentration of the fire and it was only smoldering when the firetrucks arrived. Probably saved the vehicle for a slight rebuild instead of a massive restart.
I lost the complete wiring harness on the drivers side, as well as the air intake box. The hood and right fender are toast....The vacuum canister on the pasengerside engine bay was grossly disfigured , as was the coolant overflow bottle. The plastic vacuum coupling harness in front of the throttle body dissappeared as well. But it could have been much worse.
I was looking for a reason to cut the cab off and start on a solid chassis, but never got around to it because I loved to drive it so much. I suppose this is my answer to customizing it! Always check out the source of those gas fumes. Always!
