: Will a Kick automatic work behind a Sammi 4cyl?
twistedmetal 02-09-2002, 10:33 AM OK,guys, I don't know jack about Suzuki stuff, only how to replace it with :usa: stuff. My brother wants to put my 92 Kick trans behind his 87 Sammi 4 cylinder. He doesn't know which motor it is, but everyone told him it is the "good one." Help me out?
mini4by 02-11-2002, 06:29 AM the kick auto won't boltup to the sammy motor and it will require massaging of the tranny tunnel and/or a body lift.
0ILBURNER 02-11-2002, 06:30 AM A couple of the bolts will line up (couple won't)
Not sure about the flex-plate, tho.

I've got a flex plate at the house that came off the 1.6 motor I got to put in my Sami. It will bolt up to the sami crank, using a factory adapter (that goes on the crank first). The starter ring is a larger dia so there must be a difference in the starter or where it mounts on the tranny.
Like Oilburner said the top two bolts will line up, the bottom two are 3/4" to 1" wider on the tranny. The bold dia is also larger on the Sidekick side. You'll need to sleve the holes to keep alignment.

Three issues:
1.) The auto will not bolt to the 1300 block. You need a 1600 block for it to bolt up. Careful which transmission you get, if it is a 1800 donor (i.e. Sidekick Sport) the tranny will only bolt up to the 1800 and not the 1600. The bellhousings are interchangeable (I think).
2.) A Samurai tub doesn't have a lot of tranny clearance. In order for the tranny to fit you need to either add a body lift or reshape the tranny tunnel (or a combination works well - 1" body lift and hammer massage).
3.) Watch which tranny you get, all the 4 speeds are electronic controlled. Only the 3 speed (TH180) is not electronic. Not 100% certain on that so be careful - verify what you are buying before paying your money. :)

twistedmetal 02-11-2002, 08:24 PM Now ya see, this is why the POR board kicks booty. Where else can you get so much info so quickly?
So, anyone need a Sidekick motor, auto trans, or transfer case?
Sarcastro 02-12-2002, 11:27 PM Why would you want an autmatic in a sammy anyways? what is the 1st gear on them thar autos?:D
mini4by 02-13-2002, 05:00 AM First gear who cares, it's all about the torque converter!
twistedmetal 02-13-2002, 09:50 AM I love watching you clutch boys hit that point on a "V" shaped crevace climb amd have to lunge for the brake and clutch pedals cuz you aren't positive which way you want to go when you get to the top. But us auto boys can just hold the gas a little or feather the "whoa" pedal and hold it in any position we need it in. Not to mention that the Torque Converter is a 3 to 1 gear reducer in itself. So, let's see. less pedals, slower crawl speeds, smoother wheelin and safer climbs. Why not an auto?

That's alright, I love watching you auto guys scramble for reverse when the front end starts to break over on the REAL vertical stuff! :p :p
We won't even mention the whole compression braking concept.. :rasta:
Have you ever tried to pull start an auto when you ran the winch, or lights a little too long????
twistedmetal 02-13-2002, 11:22 AM Nope. Sorry. No reverse scrambles here. Auto's do allow a rig to slide backwards in gear. Probably not the most healthy thing to do, but a vehicle with an auto will roll backwards in gear on an incline. Atleast enough to prevent a flop. Besides, reverse ain't necessary, just slap the stick up a notch and say hello to neutral. Allows more control than reverse. My auto in my Scout would hold my truck back so well with the dual cases that the rear end would actually start lifting. I usually had to stay on the throttle just a touch. So:flipoff2: C'mon, man, bring it!
twistedmetal 02-13-2002, 11:27 AM I see your point, but run the battery down? Dude! Dual Optimas and a Premiere Power Welder! Got juice! And FYI, with enough low gearing you CAN pull start an auto. I haven't had to try it, but now I'm curious!

Depending on year, 2.7x in the TH-180 and 2.8x in the 4 speed auto. The 4 speed auto is a GM 4L30. Pretty good ratios for an auto box.
Another neat tidbit, the auto behind the newer 2.5 and 2.7 V-6s are Allison auto boxes (M100?)

Yea, you need to go out and try that. Without the pump to fill up the torque converter, I can't see it being able to transfer enough torque to turn the motor over..... Let'er set for a few minutes then try to pull start it .... Inquiring minds want to know :D.
Don't care much to debate, I like my 5 speed. But, maybe I'm just a control freak :rasta:
