My freind is putting a built 351C backed by a automatic in his jeep, still undicided about axles however. He can get a set of early bronco axles for free, all I know is its a 44 front and 9" rear from what I've been told. my question is what size U-joints and brakes on the front? what about axle width? How much to upgrade the rear axle shafts to 31 spline? I'm trying to convince him it would be less work to buy an adapter to his current transfer case and run a set of J-10 axles he has, even with the cost of the adapter he would be ahead or even with less work.

The 9" should be a BB so it is easy to upgrade the axles are about 58" rear and a slight bit wider in the front. The front Bronco axles with disc brakes are going for a ton of $$ so if he decides not to run it it may be worth selling it to pay for the adapter ( if has disc brakes )

Just the brakes. In '71 the front ends went from 30s to 44s
But all E.B.s sufferd from the weak 260x u joints
Just because it is a 9" from EB does not mean it is a BB rear end. Most infact are small bearing. If the drum is 10" for the rear then it's a Small Bearing. If it is 11" it is BB. The front drums are 11" regardless of D-30 or D-44.
D-30 are kingpin knuckles, the D-44 are ball joint style.

just to make things confusing - not all 10" brake rears are small bearing some rears from '73-'75 had the 10" drums and big bearings.

All this is part of the problem with ID'ing EB's. There were many variations and over the swaps. If the third owner of a 75 ruined the rear end and went to the local u-pick he could have ended up with a small bearing housing. It would fit just fine and 'look' stock but not be as strong as the one he had. The best way to positivly id that stuff is to know what your looking for. Pull axles, measure, count splines etc. A friend of mine told me about an old guy that had a 74. He bought it new but over the years added a 351W C6/205. It was uncut and looked stock.

The only way to see if it is a big bearin or not is to measue them yourself
My firned has a SM with the 11 inch brakes, he wanted bigger brakes so off to pick and pull he went
31 axles is easy, you just need a locker and the axles, nothing else
Disc on a 44 is easy, all you need is parts from a chevy (do saerch its asked a lot here)

One of the easiest ways to ID if a 9" rear is Big Bearing, or Small Bearing..... N8's site.
http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~i6735189/
Look under "Rear Axle", then click on "Big Bearing vs. Small Bearing"
