just wondering what the compatability is. im talking the front axle here. are the perch widths the same distance apart and for the same width springs? what steering would be needed. anyone done this? any info appretiated thanks

The spring perches on the pre '79 axle are 31.5" the spring perches on the '86 and later Dana 60's are around 36". You would have to move the leaf springs inboard to do make it work.
I'd guess the cross member would interfere with either axle but more so with the pre '79 version because the diff is closer to the center of the truck.
id move the perches out not the springs in, thanks for the measurements though. as for the crossmember interfering, it wouldnt with 4 inch lift springs im sure. i swapped an 91 d60 into my 86 f250 with 4 inch springs and had no prob. my dad wants to do the same and i can get a good deal on an a 79 d60 for him. if there was any crossmember interference the grinder/sawzall could solve that problem. still not sure on steering yet though, will a newer f350 tie rod and d link work?

I'm not sure on the tie rod and drag link. The '79 is a king pin style. I'm not sure what year Ford went to the ball joint style but the steering arms are very different. You might want to spend some time under them at the dealership or at a used car lot if you can find one.
If you mount the springs inboard they will flex a little better and you'll get additional tire clearance.
One other issue to think about is driveshaft clearance. Check yours to see if you could move the pinion inboard by ~3". There might be some rubbing?

The 91 bolted right in because a 91 D60 has about 3" of tube on the driver side, and the 79 has at least 6". The diff is offset towards the drivers side more on the 86 and newer axles to clear the stupid TTB x-member. With 4 inch springs I bet you'll still have to trim a decent chunck from the x-member.
The drag link off the 78/79 F350 deffinetely won't work on a newer truck...but Not sure about the drag link.
