: Input on Swamper SSR
:smokin:
I am looking for anybody that has GOOD feedback on the SSR.
I have searched the archives and found the negative comments on the SSR's; reported sidewalls suseptable to sharp rock cuts, and lugs ripped off, and tread separation.
National Tire said they have never had a complaint, and another supplier said this also.
I am interested in the 37 12.5 15. I wheel Tellico, badlands, and similar. Maybe 4 decent wheeling trips a year, the rest are minor league stuff. Last point....I like decent street characteristics.

brutus 02-09-2002, 07:13 PM They are the best tires that I have ever had:rolleyes:
For me street 4x4 truck never take it off road so I dont know how they work
:D
moabyj 02-09-2002, 09:45 PM ive run the 37's for about a year now....they do rip the lugs off..the side walls...i have not had a problem with punctures but they are bouncy because the side wall is soft...(radial) and there is alot of sidewall.. they grip pretty good....not as good as the mtr's though....personally im goin back to the sx's....i like them better aside from slick roads....wet conditions....
deep snow...mud....sand..they do really well
tread wear is so so....not bad for being a pretty soft compound
fatkid 02-09-2002, 10:23 PM If your going to spend the money why not get the SX's?
pokey 02-09-2002, 10:41 PM I've been running them for about 6 months. They are having seperation problems at the lug's. Called the manufacturer and they said to take them to 4 wheel Parts where I bought them. They of course said it was from running them at to low a presure. WTF do they think is happening to them when your wheeling? Personally I like they're grip but I flat tow and am a little worried about one blowing out while towing.
My next set will be the SX's. It isn't a daily driver however. Don;t know for sure because they are so new but, I've seen them on others jeeps wear real fast. Faster than the SX's? I don't know.
Bud
fatkid 02-09-2002, 11:44 PM I saw the same seperation at the lugs on set of tires Tin Bender was running. I run Boggers, but I don't really drive on the street...:)
Tx Outlaw 02-10-2002, 07:33 AM I ran the 33x14.5's for a couple years - loved them (well, not until I got the 4.56 gears). Never had a problem with them - sidewall or tread. I put about 20K miles on them and sold them with about 70% tread left.
I'm now running the 37x12's and they suck! The sidewalls are holding up fine, but the tread is basically falling off. I've put about 4K miles on these and they look a lot worse than the 33's did at 20K!
I'll be running SX's next time.
BTW: this is on a Jeep TJ.
FJ4ZROX 02-10-2002, 08:09 AM I have 35*12.50 SSR's on my FJ40. The tires have about 10k mile son them and they appear to be holding up well. No problems with sidewalls or lugs falling off the tire.
I got them since my Cruiser used to be driven tot he trail...and these have provided a GREAT balance for on/off road. Now that my Cruiser is becoming a trailer queen, I will probably sell these and get a set of either PJ Dirt Grips, MTR's, or SX's.
mudbug97tj 02-10-2002, 08:10 AM Well I have had mine on for a year or so and I have not had any complaints so far .They work good on the road not real noisey and so far they are wearing real well .Idont know how they hold up on rocks since I do alot of hunting andmost of the time I am just going through the woods or trails, but for mud and snow they just cant be beat .
biggreenjeep 02-10-2002, 08:15 AM Another alernative to the SSR that has good of offroad grip and good road handling why don't you check out the PJ Dirt Grips?? I have the 36x14.50's and love em.
badassjeepguy 02-10-2002, 08:30 AM i got a brand new 35 sitting here.... ill sell it to ya cheap, just a little 5 inch gash in the sidewall... :D i think there sidewalls are too weak
Cutter 02-10-2002, 08:39 AM Input on Swamper SSR run whatever ya want...but later on YOU"LL be posting neg. comments on them. Aw screw everybody's experiance and run 'thornbirds'!:flipoff2:
pokey 02-10-2002, 08:52 AM I've got friends running the 35's and they've had no problems with the lugs falling off. It appears to just be the 37" tires that are having the problems.

Bud does he wheel? I hear they work great wheelin the mall parking lot, a bit of trouble on the speedbumps, but nothing a strap won't fix....:flipoff2:
offroadr35 02-10-2002, 09:03 AM I've had 33" MTRs, 35" SSRs, 36 and 38.5" SXs. The SSR and MTRs were on a daily driver that did it's share of wheeling too. Both tires i thought were very good on the road and I got pretty good wear out of them too (40-50,000 miles.). Tore one SSR sidewall offroad. IMO the MTR is a better tire, but at the price they charge for the 37s i would go with the SSRs without hesitation. The SX is unquestionably better offroad than the SSR. I currently have 38.5" SXs on my bronco which only sees road time on the way to the trail. I do not like the road manners of the SX at all, but once you get to the trail it's worth it. If you have beadlocks they can easily be run at 2psi and not have a problem. They are TOUGH tires, i almost wonder why i carry a spare sometimes. If it's a daily driver go with the SSRs, if not or if you really don't mind putting up with them on the street go with the SXs.

pokey 02-10-2002, 09:06 AM He sure does! He put's them through the paces. He does complain about them wearing out way to fast however. It's a daily driver but, is very well built for wheeling.
Bud:smokin:
Jtisdale 02-10-2002, 10:23 AM They wear fast. One good thing, they seem to measure very close to stated height.

44Runner 02-10-2002, 12:09 PM Other than not being about to get too many miles out of them I have had no problems with mine. I think I have about 20-25K on mine and they are hurting for replacement, mine measure a little over 32 (metric). I am hard on the side walls, never had a problem there, rocks or curbs. Have had rocks rip small gashs in some lugs, but not really bad at all and mostly when heavily gettin it. I would say a good tire, but expensive and wears quickly. If you ever incounter mud, swampers (real ones, not truxxus) are the way to go IMO...

I thought these were like 280.00 each. I am too pooooooooooor.
thanx for the info though.
I am getting more BAD feedback than GOOD feedback. The tires are too expensive for that much BAD feedback. I appreciate the input.
It looks like I need to stay with 35" size (probably MTR) until I can afford beadlocks and set it up right.
37" SSR

Pavemen 02-10-2002, 05:25 PM Ya know, I don't wheel my truck as hard as you guys may, but it is a 6500lb 139" wheelbase with a Detroit in the rear. I am running the 35x12.50's on 15x10s. With 10,000 miles on them, they are worn through the first "layer" of the center lug tread blocks. They would not have worn so fast, but I had the pressure to high and now that I run 30psi they are wearing much slower.
As for performance, they are good on the street, track well, good wet pavement traction.
They are pretty soft sidewall, have not torn one yet, but I have use the sidewall lugs to claw the front end up out of a 3ft rut using only the sidewall "lugs". A few of the outer lugs have tears in them at the base (maybe a 1/4" deep tear), but none have come off and they are still balanced from the original mouting.
They kick ass in the mud and on rocks do well. Flex pretty good when aired down.
I am torn between another set of SSRs and the MT/Rs for an all around tire. If I can afford it, I am thinking of Big-O X/T for everyday (due to price and longevity) and SXs for wheeling as a second set of tires.
snacksnack 02-10-2002, 06:47 PM best damm street tire i have ever owned :D :D
welndmn 02-11-2002, 11:41 AM my old 35x12.5 gripped like crazy! they were a sweet tire, but i did slash a sidewall
i now run 38's so i got SX's
slozook 02-11-2002, 04:09 PM i ran the 33x14.50's for about 4 or 5 thousand miles till i flopped over.. i still have 'em for sale.. they're good tires.. mine never balanced, but i didn't care.. i hear the separation problems have been fixed.. cut a few lugs, but never had one rip off.. worked great in mud and stuck to the few rocks pretty good.. did ride better on the road than my boggers =] .. they're a great dual purpose tire that might one day tear a sidewall, although mine did good.. on my toy they were a great tire.. but now i won't even consider puttin 'em on my trail only zook... it's gonna get real tires like 2 sx's and 2 boggers..
