I have a cj7 with the 258 and im tired of it cutting out while im out wheeling. I heard about an mpi system that i can upgrade too so i did some research and it looks like its the route for me except the 2k price tag. the parts used in the mpi system apear to be mostly stock parts... Is this true?

actually, you can get it all from the junkyard. so what did you find when you searched for this subject?

or did you search?

I mainly found install pages and what people thought about the kit. I found a kinda crappy parts list and an extensive parts list of brand new parts. but I couldn't find anyone who had gotten used parts and put it together. but on to putting one together...
The intake manifold is stock jeep i assume. If so should I find an HO manifold or will my buddies old non HO (89 4.0) work? If his will work should i upgrade the injectors to ford 24lb injectors?
I have no problem asking my questions on this post but if someone could post,pm, or email (jdfab88@yahoo.com) me a junkyard parts list it would really help out

89 is carbureted, you need one from a 90 or 91 and up. Other than that, all I know about jeep engines is how to take one out and swap a chevy engine in its place  I do, however, know how to SEARCH and I found these threads which may be of assistance to you

I'm swapping to port injection on my CJ5 right now but am not using the stock Mopar computer. Instead, I'm using a megasquirt (http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html) programmable computer this will allow me to keep my current distributor/advance setup and tune it for my non-stock engine, also it's much cheaper then buying a kit.

the 4.0L is fuel injected period. When it was introduced in 87, in the XJ, it was MPI. The YJ didn't get it until 91.

I don't think there is an easy or cheap way to do the MPI conversion. You will run into p/s pump mounting issues and end up with most of the parts you would need to do a whole 4.0 conversion. I would try to get a complete 4.0 out of a 99 or older XJ, ZJ, TJ or YJ and swap the whole thing in. Get all the accessories, wiring and computer. It bolts right up. You would just need to adapt the crank sensor onto your bellhousing. After you disect all the usless wires out of the harness, it is literally a 4 wire hook up. You need a battery hot, ignition run hot, ignition run/start hot and a ground. I put one in last winter and it was relatively simple. Put an external elec fuel pump on and rock on.

Good luck

All I have to say is buy the kit. Yeah it's $2100, but it also comes with everything you need including idiot proof instructions pictures and all(you do need to buy the harmonic balancer also). For me my time is much more important, and running back and forth to wrecking yards crossing my fingers I've bought everything I need gets costly.

On the other hand I hear the 4.0L engine conversion is a pretty good deal also. I've heard some people having some wiring problems, but for the most part once it's in it's all good.

I took me 8 years to get my MPI. I wish I could have afforded it back then because it's a night and day difference.

Ditto, except it only took me 2 years to save up :p
Been running flawlessly for ~5 years now :smokin:

not sure what state you live in, or if the jeep will still be used on the street?

if you want to use on the street then buy one, it will have the proper paper work for the state smog people.

i have a 84 cj7 with the 258 and it now has the mopar setup works great but is feneky some times, the only problem is the late great state of kalifourna says i am a gross poluter, and my smog levels are very low.
............... just want to get a "suv" off the road.

as far as the computer goes for an mpi set up does it use the a stock 91-95 computer or something special

The computer that comes with the MPI is not a factory unit, go to hesco's site and read . . .
