Sounds like yours could have a stock D44 rear...you can get probably half your purchase price right there, ha.

Smokin' deal for $700! Looks like you've got a fun new toy.

High up on that list would be frame strengthening. Brace that bad buy BEFORE the cracks start.

Smartass,

Most 87-89 XJ's with factory tow package had the 44. You migh have scored!

Don't forget to brace your steering box. Rusty's and MORE both sell one, but you would be better off just making one yourself as Rusty's will have one of the 3 holes actually line up! Change out your cooling system pronto and ditch that plastic overflow bottle. Make sure that you soak your rear leaf spring bolts with a penetrating lube (PB Blast) weeks in advance of adding new springs. The nut that is welded on the inside of the frame will break loose and the only way to get at it is to pull the carpet back in the pass compartment and cut 4"x4" hole in the floor. Upgrade to TJ shafts will get you the 297/760 ujoints. Sway bar discos, obviously. Buy a spare CPS and TPS and keep them with you.

Thats about it. Get familiar with the search on Naxja.org. Oh yeah, Sierra Chapter meetings of NAXJA are at Roundtable on Keifer Blvd (near watt) first thursday of every month. We have about 35 local XJers and 10-15 usually bring rigs to meetings.

FInally, do you live in river park? I keep seeing a ranger like yours on Carlson.

:D Why yes, well, i used to live there, till i gave the ol man the finger :flipoff: ... Now and then i stop by, dinner, famly bs, and i store some of my crap there...

I actually may swap in some chevy 61" springs, heard they are very coosh, flexy, and durable. (for the rear)

What if i just used thE X as a tow rig, to trailer my ranger? Build up the ranger, and use the X to tow it via FLATBED Trailer.
Im just debating on leaving the X, stock with power mods here and there, but keep it as a nice daily... So that i could go ALL out on the ranger and not have to worrie about CHP.

I could take the YJ dana 30 out of my ranger (which i was gunna do any way with the 44 i have sitting in the garage). Throw the YJ leaf sprung under the XJ.
REASONS:
1)Heard they are stronger
2)I can do a inexpensive lift (maybe some 32's max if tow rig)
3)Same axle ez swap
4)Cus i like to be diffferent
5) Cus they both utilize vaccume disco (im lazy)
6)i dont like coils :)

I'll have to looksi again tonight but the axle sure looks like a DANA 35 to me, caus i put one under the rear of the ranger when i did the SOA swap with the dana30 leaf sprung up front, it seemed ezer, untill i cracked the housing 3 times

Your going to really have to hack the fender to run 36's.... I mean really hack. Most guys cut quite a bit too just fit 35's. I wouldn't go with a D60 though. Too much weight. The XJ's are a light rig so why add extra weight?? I think D44 would be plenty. Nice rig and nice score.

I think the added weight and Full width would help for stability, and with a 10" lift i should be just fine :) maybe a little fender dammage, hell maybe i'll make my own...

SMartass:

you can run 36s with about 6-7" of lift. I sit about that high with 35s and I trimmed some, but not a huge amount. 10" on an XJ should anoly be done with leafs and hi-steer, otherwise you get into bad steerign and control arm angles. My XJ is the green 97 and I live in river park. Your dad has the built white T100, right?

The XJs have reverse rotation (hi pinion) d30s vs standard (lo pinion) in the YJ. More strength in the R&P and easier to lift because of the hi pinion for the XJ.

14 year old non HO towing your ranger and flatbed? Not advised. My buddy had an 87 that he towed his sammi with a few times and he was doing 40 on I-80. Cooling problems and no power. Plus if you have a D35, you will burn that up.

Might want to check your sources on that. YJ's have high pinions too, your thinkin TJ and CJ.

LOL, haha i was gunna say WTF? LOL

Yup the dana 30 from a 87 YJ is beefer than that of a 89 XJ, even to the naked eye, i compared last night. Also unfortunately i have the dana35 rear (LAME)...

Yup my ol man has the T-100
Nice RUNELL BUMPER WITH PUSH BARS & i9000DX WARN winch

Yeah i plan on going front leaf sprung reverse shackle.

And from what i have read my engine is the 4.0l EFI HO
185HP 220FTLBS TQ

It definitely giddyups...

What gear set/axles u runnin? any upgrades?

Also i have a weird Grumbling sound upon full accelleration from a stop. wtf is this?

The more i think about it, i think im just gunna build up the XJ and let the OL ranger out to pasture :emb:

Or try a Plan B - Swap in an early Bronco front 44 and use the radius arms to keep the coils ... as long as your beefing or creating a subframe. Then add the 9" to the back.

If you're planning on cutting the fenders to run 35+" tires, why not weld th eback door smooth and cut into it too ...

Hmmm, maybe i need to shop the wants ads. Smokin deal!

I run the 30 in the front still, but have the D44 ujoints. I have a currie-built 9" in the rear with detroit and hardened axles. 4.56s, 35s. Either this year or next I will drop an Atlas 3.8 into it.

That grumbling sound is likely your exhaust pipe running into the body or crossmember when you get on the gas. Motor mounts/and or tranny mount are probably shot. Have someone look under the engine/tranny while you power brake.

Didn't all 89s have the non-HO engine? Little less HP/less favorable torque versus the HO but still a good stock engine. Likewise on the axles, d-35 a little less good than the later 8-1/4 (and even less against the d-44 that came with the towing package) but still okay for stock. All the more reason to upgrade both of them since stock ain't all that hot.

Yeah your engine is the non-HO version. The HO didn't come around till '91.
