: Tranny Woes (2001 F350)
bigdude 02-09-2002, 11:33 PM 2001 F350 Crew Cab Power Stroke/Auto w/ 7100 Switch Chip
8" lift with 40" Ground Hawgs
Still with stock R&P
Does the Tranny need any calibration for shift points in order to keep it running smooth? In other words not burning up:eek:
Because it isn't getting into gear, It'll rev but won't get into gear (forward or reverse). it jumps but won't stay in.
Chad H 02-09-2002, 11:36 PM Sounds like you may have a transfer case problem
The shifter forks might be broke, worn out.. Is this a np 271 transfer case? They are notorious for this.. Jumping in and out of gear.. There is a little piece of plastic on the fork that wears, falls off.. makes it jump outa gear.. Possible this is the problem..Chad:D
PS sounds like a sweet rig
bigdude 02-09-2002, 11:54 PM But if it was the shifter forks in the transfer case would it do it in 2wd?
It'll slip to about 3000 rpms and then catch. This is on the pavement and there is plenty of fluid in the tranny.
About 50,000 miles on the truck. I've heard before that if you didn't get the shift points recalibrated for the larger tires, then the tranny will fry, any truth to this?
Chad H 02-10-2002, 12:00 AM Yes I will still do it in 2wd.. Remember Tcases have a neutral position also..
Not sure about the recalibration thing...
Chad H 02-10-2002, 12:01 AM Well I can see shift points that are off burning a tranny out...
BIGSTIC 02-11-2002, 04:55 PM Go over to Ford-diesel (http://www.ford-diesel.com) .
They know everything about the Late model super duty trucks and a bunch of them are running close to the same setup as you are and as far as I know they didn't have to make any tranny adjustments.
RFR2212 02-11-2002, 05:29 PM My only newbie thought is... Isn't it under warrenty, or has it been voided by the mods? I know depending where ya live, some places the warrenty would be void, some places not... I'd just think that Ford would replace it... seems like if its an 01 it'd be under warrenty
But then what do I know? I'm a newbie! :p

bigdude 02-11-2002, 11:48 PM It needs to be rebuilt. It got fried. Fluid was black w/ shavings
Took it to the dealer with some 265 tires on it and they are fixing it.
It's going to be covered by the warranty:D :D
I guess I should've mentioned that this problem arose shortly after a pull off with a dodge ram. Dragged him all over the place though.
I believe a better cooler is in order, don't you?
Chad H 02-12-2002, 02:15 AM Glad they are covering it under warrenty...
As far as preventing this from happening again, yes a cooler would be a great idea.. Other than that, possibly check into the shift points a little more, Chad:D
strong_like_tractor 02-12-2002, 12:52 PM Your CPU needs to be recalibrated to fix your shift points and speedo, but the smallest number it can take is 601 revs/mile which equals out to 35" tires. You'll have to get a Superlift True-speed thingy to correct for your 40", all shift points and speedo readings come form the tone ring in the rear diff. As for the r&p you should seriously look into getting a set of 4:56's instead of those 3:73's

Kevbo 02-12-2002, 01:14 PM I drive a stick, but the slushbox drivers at Ford-diesel.com all rave over Brian, of Brian's truck shop in lead hill (?) arkansas as the best there is with the E4OD and 4R100 trannsmissions. Guys are driving 3000 mile round trip, or paying shipping to have him sprinkle holy water on thier trucks. Apparently it is somewhat cheaper if you bring him a new transmission for upgrade, rather than waiting 'till it dies.
