I just got a "new" 87 ford van with a 460 that i plan to use for towing a large trailer. the only problem is that the carb is pretty well shot, so im wondering what you guys think the best way to go would be for a little torque gain(possibly) and extreme reliability?????
I need to keep a carb as this is on a budget so no fuel injection

my buddy runs a 600 cfm edelbrock on his 460 bronco. it has a mild cam and a performer intake... not much more. it pulls like a powerstroke and has SO much vacuum that the throttle response is awesome. it'll run on any incline. seems to be a pretty good match.

i have a holley 780 vacuum secondary on my 460, with no other mods, i smoke most everything i come across, my friend has a 78 with a 460, 750 double pumper and an RV cam, its a close race but i usualy eat his lunch....

For a street rig, I'd highly recommend an Edelbrock as well. Bolt in on, set the idle (if necessary) and drive it. In my experience, Holley's are junk, but many swear by them.

ive built many holleys, and run a few edelbrocks and carter AFBs, ill admit ive come across a few POS holleys, mostly OEM models, but the vast majority of holleys are very reliable and produce consistant power...now those other carbs, ive seen people make them work good on daily drivers, but not many, they are good carbs for wide open situations and thats about it....people always tell me they always have to adjust their holley...well thats user ignorance, everytime someone has brought a vehicle to me saying the holley needs adjusted or rebuilt, i put a timing light on there engine and low and behold the timing was off 90% of the times....everyone has there preference on carbs, they all make good carbs AND bad carbs, opinions are like assholes-everyone has one and most of them stink, so take your edelbrock and stick it up your opinion.......

Ive had good luck with the 4180 that came stock with that motor. It flows around 575 CFM. I tested the one I had with the other carbs, and that one seemed to produde the best initial low end grunt of the bunch.

I run a newer Edelbrock Performer "RPM" carb. Rated at 850 cfm, this sounds like overkill, but it is a modified quadrajet carb. The primaries are small so vacuum is great at low RPM, and when you open up the HUGE secondaries, you can really feel the fuel flow. This carb has performed flawlessly on my 429 in some very extreme conditions, and next to fuel injection, there isnt a carb made that can touch it. It will virtually run upside down, on its side, and performs great whoomping over moguls at high speeds. On the highway I get better mileage then my old 650 performer, and the extra power it gives is a nice bonus. Pick up a calibration kit for it though because mine tended to run a lil lean out of the box.

I'm not sure if that late of a 460 has the spread bore intake or not, but if it does, you can find stock square bore intakes off of early 429's or 460's in the junk yard. This is a cheap way of allowing you to run a standard carb. I've done this swap and run Edelbrock 750's on the two '78 460's that I've had, and had great luck. The only problem I have fought is with icing up in the winter.

If you get a manual choke carb it is jetted riched than the elec. Both of mine a bought as manuals and put the chokes on myself.
