: Kicking around ideas for new buggy
And it might be kinda important to run Ford gear. Motor choices would be a 2.9 FI motor, 4.0 L , 300 inline 6 and possibly a 302. Trans would most likley be a c4 and transfer cases??? c4 203-205 or d20 or an atlas???
First question is are there any problems with the motors listed when on their side?? Problems such as oil starvation, hydro locking or just wont run on a wierd angle?? I am kind of leaning toward the 4.0L right now but what kind of weight diffrences are we talking about?
I am leaning toward a c4 tranny. I already have one (spare for the race truck) that has a rev pattern manual valve body in it and it is beefed up.
I have no clue on the transfer cases at all. I want to be able to have front/rear disconnect ability, gears low enough and the lighest weight possible. Not to mention that I dont want to spend an arm and a leg...maybe just an arm or a leg???
I will be gratefull for any help!!
Forgot to add that the c4 is a 2wd tranny. I assume that the tailshaft housing will need to be changed out but that it will work in a 4wd?
Also is it possible to mate a c4 to a toy transfer case? Just curious.
malkintent 12-23-2004, 07:50 AM hey id say
302 fuelie c4, heavyduty pum,p new planitary gears, 203-d20 t-caes crawaler gears.
now exactly how big are you'r apendiggies? :grinpimp:
RedNeckRea 12-23-2004, 09:26 AM jc...here's what I'd do
302 out of a mustang or late model explorer so it's FI.
c-4
atlas II 3.8.
the d-20 can be twin sticked, has lower gears available, and can be beefed up. but for the same amount you can get the bulletproofness of an atlas.
whatjoo gonna do with the fugly buggly:confused:

That is the wifes rig so I dunno but there are thoughts of selling it
huyha 12-24-2004, 03:54 PM I'd Do:
Fulie 300IL6 (good low end torque),
C4 With a Big pump big cooler, cryo'd gears
Np203 with 3.1:1 gears and Dana 20 Twin stick with 3.15 Gears..

Since when did a 203 come with 3-1 gears?
manteca 12-24-2004, 06:42 PM Those new 4.0L engines have a lot of go. A buddy of mine has a new ranger with one and I was throughly impressed. I'd like to see one in a buggy. Anyone know the weight difference of a 4.0 and a 5.0?

Since WMS started making 3:1 gearset's for them a couple of years ago. ;)
I went 5.0 HO w/EFI to a built C4 and to a EB20. Eventually, I will end up going to an Atlas II w/a 4.3 or 5.0 low. The 5.0 is pound for pound one of the best and easiest motors to work with. :)

You can do anything you've the money for.
The only Stock t-case to come behind the C4 was a Bronco Dana 20.
If FedEx didn't trash my tranny, I've pic and info on the 2wd tail shaft vs. the 4wd Tailshaft.
Next winter I might do a C4-203, looks like the Chevy 203 with 27 splines is what I'm leaning towards. The 203 23 spline dodge can also work with the custom splined 2wd shaft.

TDbronco 12-25-2004, 12:13 AM Well the 4.9 300 I-6 is a great motor but it had shiat for HP carbed 129hp and EFI is like 160hp but it is reliable as all hell but you would want to put a scraper in the pan oh yeah it weighs 517lbs. I have one they are great but I am swaping out to a 460.
I really want to run a 4.0 but I was hoping to find out if there was a problem with the 4.0 when it is at extreme angles. For example the 4.3 is said to have a bad oil starvation problem when on its side. A 4.0 would be sweet because I could run the same motor in both the race truck and the buggy. I would also like the 302 but what is the weight diffrence between a 302 and 4.0?
Thanks for all the input so far. I have a few other questions about some of the posts above but I snuck on here and have to get off soon.
RockRanger 12-25-2004, 10:14 PM I have seen a few people flop over 4.0 equiped rangers and explorers and not have much of an issue. Only real thing I saw was oil would come out of the valve cover breather and into the intake. I think some creative routing of how it was plumbed could solve this like people do on the fuel tank on comp rigs. When I had my 2.9 equiped ranger I had it sitting on its driverside for about 10 minutes running while my friend got the winch line hooked up and never had a problem with it burning oil or making and funny noises. I know tdavis on this site rolled his old navajo 3 times I think. When he rolled it with me out at los Coyotes he ended up on the roof for about an hour till we could get it back over. After we added 3 quarts of oil to it we fired it right up little smoke i think it blew and he ended up driving it back to the bay area the next day.
rokcrln 12-26-2004, 12:40 AM In my buggy I am building I have a 351W efi mated to a built C5 rev pattern, manual shift to an atlass II 5.0-1. As far as oil starvation it will happen with all motors at some piont of prolonged angle. I plan on running pro-long just for the chance of no oil for short periods of time.
