In a stroke of genius Home Depot has decided to stop carrying the three wire 50A 220V outlet used by virtually every welder and plasma cutter on the planet - er, ok, at least in the country.

http://www.superford.org/getfile/164527/fullsize/bench220outlet.jpg

I sent them an email about it and got this:

"We appreciate you taking the time to forward your concerns about the
availability of the 50amp 220v outlet. Home Depot carries a wide variety
of products and we attempt to replenish our selection based on
customer's buying habits. We apologize that we do not carry the 50amp
220v outlet.

If you would like to speak to a Customer Care professional, please call
us at 1-800-553-3199 (U.S.) or 1-800-668-2266 (Canada), with reference
number 1866295. We would be happy to assist you.

At first I thought this was only at my local store but it appears to at least be Colorado-wide, and presumably nationwide.

What's my point? I dunno, I just think it sucks. I know, I know, go to a local electrical supply house. That's great but it's much less convenient, they're not open on weekends and depending upon the counter guy I pay anywhere from wholesale to high retail.

Can someone confirm the 220V buzz boxes Home Depot sells require this receptacle? I bet they do. Those merchandising people are smart :shaking:

Dang!

I suspect the buzz boxes are only 30Amp outlets.

Local autoparts place STOCKED the 50Amp outlet and plug! Yep, they have a "welding rack" with all sorts of good stuff.

I'm not surprised. They've done the same thing to me with other stuff. Salesman said "I dunno... we don't carry it anymore. Go to Lowe's."

Yeah, the 6-50R. I only found it in the flush mount version not the box mount. I wound up using another plug on the welder.

What bothers me is they still sell the 6-50P! Well, WTF?

Have you tried the Home Depot @ C470 and Quebec (the builder's supply one)?

That's the only store in town that carries HVAC ductwork now too.

They are really starting to suck if you're a contractor and HD is closer than the supply house. Anymore I just go straight to the supply house even if it may be another 30 minutes away.

Ok here is a little secret, HOME DEPOT SUCKS!! For electrical shit the electrical supply houses are almost always cheaper and have better selection. Grainger will give you a catalog and you can order from home for will call. If you are a contractor time is money and looking around home depot to find shit is money out of your pocket. Home Depot really really sucks if you are a contractor. Quit pissing and moaning about how much HD sucks and shop elsewhere.

I am suprized you even got an answer from home depot. thier customer service really sucks. one of my brothers is the assistant manager of the woodland, ca store. he told me that any time an employee is within 6 feet of a customer that they are required to say hello or can I help you. How many times has one been that close and not said a word? most of the stores are un-orderly and it will take you longer to check out than it will to go looking all over the fawking store for what you need.

I'm not a contractor and love HD 'cause I can wander around and pick and choose what I want from their stock rather than having to give a list to some guy behind a counter. About 80% of the time HD is cheaper on electrical stuff than what CED charges me.

But thanks for the advice above, that's really helpful and I'm writing it down for future reference

The nearest Lowe's is an hour away, bummer.

I was looking for one a while back and they kept telling me it was just out of stock so I went to a few different locations and I got them to sell me the display for the disco'd price! :D:D

I think its continent-wide. They're squashed all the corner hardware stores that used to carry everything. Now they only stock material for their 'pet' projects. Keep an eye on the yellow-tag items... that's the stuff they won't be carrying anymore.

The HD around here hasn't had them for a while if ever. I've just used the range plug (10 50R?) and changed plugs on my compressor and welder. Same capacity, easy and now I don't have to worry about plug availability. Yeah, Home Depot still sucks though!

They're squashed all the corner hardware stores that used to carry everything. Now they only stock material for their 'pet' projects.

That is the real shame of it. There were three "old time" hardware stores around here up until about ten years ago. Had just about anything that you needed and were willing to get it if they did not. Courteous people behind the counter that were willing to give someone real advice as long as there were not fourteen other customers standing there waiting. They just could not make a profit selling only the items that the warehouse stores did not.

So now we have Lowes and HD. Staffed by people that don't know a rotary hammer from a regular drill. Only carry the things that Sam and Suzy homeowner are likely to need after watching HGTV all afternoon.

For me, it comes down cultivating a relationship with the supply houses. They don't want to waste their time with the people that normally go to HD. But I'm in there enough that they have started to recognize me.

I know that doesn't help if just once in a blue moon you need an outlet...

Interesting. I built a nice 220V extension cord a little while back and HD did not have the right plug for my welder. I just thought they were sucking as usual with re-stocking it. Went straight to Lowes across the freeway and they had it all. Same for metric bolts, HD really sucks in that dept., Lowes just a tad less. Sad thing is the best bolt places are usually the farm and ranch stores, but none around me in metro hell.

Hmmm, D60 was who I was talking to. He is on the left side of the state. I got a Lowes about a mile from the house and if they don't got what I need then I go to Allwire in Denver for wire products, or Hi-Strength bolt for fasteners.

However that being said I hate Lowes. There was a good store called Eagles where this Lowes is now. They had a huge fastener department, rows and rows of bolts of every discription. Now Lowes just has one row of the stuff.

Lucky for me there is a decent ACE hardware just down the street from me as well.

I've had good luck w/ the local supply warehouses. Granted, you pretty much need to know what you're looking for when you go in, but as long as you pay in cash they seem pretty content on giving you the lower contractor price. At least that's been my experience. The 50A plug at HD (which they were out of) was around $13 or so bucks, got the same one at the local supply house for $7, so I got 2 of them :D

I was doing a remodel at a midas moving some equipment we had to run about 200 feet of pipe over head and could only work there on a sunday. They wanted me to buy as much of the material with their HD card. We were able to get everything except the recepticle. I do not go into HD if I am wearing anything that shows I am an electrical contractor because most of the people they have in their dept have no idea what they are doing and as soon as other customers see my logo I get swamped with questians. I normally only go there when it is closer than supply house or if I know item is cheaper there.

For fasteners, I've been using Fastenal. Not sure if you have one local. I spend more time in Fastenal, the two local electrical supply houses, the one HVAC/Plumbing supply house, and the lumberyard than I do in Lowes and HD.

I guess I'm lucky. There are 2-3 guys in my HD's electrical dept that can answer questions with authority. The rest are just parts chasers.

I hate Home Depot!!! For some ungodly reason, they will not keep tax ID numbers on file. If I have to send someone to H-D to buy something, I must make a copy of the tax form and write a letter authorizing someone to act as my agent so they can sign the damned form. I have sent innumerable letters to them and have never received a response. One would think if they want to attract professional customers, they would offer some sort of incentive.

I would have expected a response as a trade customer and am very surprised that a non-trade customer like D-60 got a response when I didn't when complaining about the tax situation...
