: 1994 Grand Cherokee lift question
K5Crawling 12-23-2004, 10:10 PM I will be getting my wife a 94 grand and she wants it lifted and tires put in it. I was also thinking about locking the rear end, but I am not sure what full time locker to use. I was thinking for tires either 33" or 35". On the lift something that is very flexy for the trails and rocks we have here in North Carolina. The 1994 has a I6 and has a automatic tranny, not sure what tranny it is or tcase. this is are first jeep so any help would be great.
Also we will be getting a 2001 or 2002 Grand with a V8 and was woundering the samething for it.
Can you guys help me out here please.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help. :jeep:
rockreligious 12-24-2004, 08:38 AM Your drivetrain is likely a 40.l/999trans/231t-case. could be a 241t-case. as far as the lift I had if you want to run 33's or 35's on the trail and have it flexy you will need to lift 5 to 8 inches. I had 33's on my grand with trimed fenders and still rubbed a little with a 3 1/2" lift. as far as a locker goes I would just buy a cheap lockrite or ez locker. It doesnt need to be any stronger than the axle your putting it in. (warning) if you have a Dana 35 in the rear, which you likely do, find yourself a Dana 44 or a ford 8.8 to swap in or you will be breaking shafts, and bending housings once you install a locker in it. trust me Ive been through this. ZJ's have a good wheelbase and the drivetrain is a good crawling combo, 231 has lots of upgrades available. ZJ's only negative is light axles and unibody. check out rubicon express for your suspension.
The newer Grand you mentioned should come with a Dana 44 in the rear already. just upgrade the front shafts to alloy's and lift it. Its suspension is a little different than the earlier ZJ, but similiar.
ItsaCJ6 12-24-2004, 08:39 AM OK if some dill hole, went into Chevy talk and asked about where he could find a fart can exuast tip for his 72 blazer, ................You get the picture here........
So with that said... I bet you can figure upgrades are needed... can you put 35's on your half ton and expect it to perform awesome? Can you put 35's on you 1/2 ton with out a 6 inch lift (not counting a sawzall lift).... Let use that search button. and crusie the net insearch of more info.\
ok so this took about 80 seconds. I didnt try real hard.

Norcaljr 12-24-2004, 04:58 PM Your ZJ is going to have a 242 TC which is good, but its also going to have a Dana 35c in it. I wouldnt put anything other than a limited slip in it without running the risk of breaking shafts.
I would also suggest checking out Jeepsunlimited.com Grand Cherokee forum (http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=180)
Hvy_Chevy 12-24-2004, 06:34 PM D35 - don't lock it, not worth it
D44A - aluminum center D44, hardly better than D35, very few locker choices.
go for the biggest tire on the least lift.
anthing more than 4" lift go for long arms (clayton, kevin, RE)

K5Crawling 12-25-2004, 08:49 AM Norcaljr and Hvy_Chevy thanks for the info it helps alot. I am thinking about getting a ford 8.8 or ford 9" for the rear and a ford D44 for later.
Shay I did the search and even the one you posted did not answer the questions I had. I.E. what axles and what tcase my ZJ has. The flipoff was a joke and not a insult, it was a joke. I have learned you can not have thin skin here on PBB.
mgmorrison 12-25-2004, 11:25 AM Don't do the 9", the 8.8 is good due to rear disc's
Martin
PS Don't worry about Shay, he is just a homo softie.....
K5Crawling 12-25-2004, 12:01 PM mgmorrison thanks for the info about the 8.8.
Hvy_Chevy 12-25-2004, 04:42 PM my guess is you have a 42RE, 231, and D35
if you shift 2wd, 4hi, 4lo it's 231
if it's 2wd, 4full, 4part, 4lo it's 242
