: FJ60 rear brakes on a '40?
I was considering puting FJ-60 rear brakes on my 71 FJ-40. I'm doing a disc axle conversion on the front. I like the thought of self adjusters and single wheel cyls. But, does the adjuster work by backing up like most vehicles, or does it work by using the park brake (looks like this on SOR's page). I would prob be using my orig trans case brake.
Any thoughts?
Yes, I have thought about rear discs too.

Sixgun 02-10-2002, 12:04 PM Hey David, I did a fj60 rear swap in my 40 nad the rear drums worked well with the stock brake setup and with the 67 ford master cyl i'm running. I chose to keep the stock rear driveshaft e-brake and installed the fj60 ebrake, I can stop my vehicle if I catch a brake line on the trail......It's happend before...Tankota :D
You adjust the wheel cylinders the same as 40's except you only have one adjustment per side.....to save yourself work set the shoes as you slide on the drum ( you want them to barely make contact with the drum and not hinder rotation)
good luck!! -Rick
wngrog 02-10-2002, 12:15 PM I have a rear FJ-60 axle, how do you make the drums work on a '40? The bolt patterns on the housing are different??

?????? which bolt patterns? the driveshaft flange just requires a toy mini flange turned 180 and drilled for coarse spline pattern or an early 3rd (the route I went 4.11) and thats only if you have an early Cruiser. 74 and up bolt right on.....If your talking about the ebrake I just bought a FJ-40 ebrake lever, cut a hole in my tranny tunnel hump bolted it in then spliced a cable from the ebrake linkage on the FJ60 housing to the lever. I turned the middle brace upside down for more clearance. If your talking about the spring perches I just cut off the old ones then bought a set ($10 apiece) of 3" 5 1/2 Warrior spring perches and welded where I needed them. Other than those pitfalls it's pretty much a no brainer. :D
Sixgun 02-10-2002, 09:50 PM Here's the finished product, it ran fine with the stock master cylinder.....I had to change a few lines to 10mm x .1 brake ends cuz my 69 ran those funky 9mm x .125 brake ends...there all gone now. :D
I guess the question is will the backing plates bolt onto the FJ40 axle housing??
Does anyone know how the brakes self adjust? (park brake or backing up)
Thanks for all the input........have some

KrustyKruiser 02-11-2002, 07:49 AM The backing plates for the 60 drums are diferent than the 40 drums - there is an off-set diference too. with some grinding, drilling new holes and spacers I guess they could be adapted. Not sure that it is worth the effort - I started doing it and decided it wasnt worth the hassle. But having said that, 60 drums are self adjusting and have the e-brake built in (get rid of that funky tcase drum on the 40!)

Parking brake.
That Rear disk brake set up is looking better and better
The parts for the drum setup would cost maybe as much as the disks.
rick d 02-12-2002, 07:35 PM E-1980 semi floater rear end backing plate= 6 holes (bolts)
E-1979 FF backing plate =8 holes

Rick - I am pretty sure what sixgun (the other Rick) was saying is that he put in the entire FJ60 rear axle - he was talking about re-drilling the DL flange to mate the older style 40 DL with the 60 pinion (he used a minitruck flange - I think) - KK
Sixgun 02-14-2002, 08:09 PM Yeppers Andy (KK) I did just bolt the whole Fawking thing in and rolled with it.......Don't even bother tryin to adapt the ends yoda....go disc or go whole FJ60 axle bro.......
=Rick
Thanks All,
I'm almost ready to put the 79 disc front end in. Then I'll decide on the rear.
