: Painting leaf springs?
44Runner 02-10-2002, 12:19 PM Got some leafs off the front of a 1980 Waggy and they are lookin nasty. They are fairly rusty, so I want to clean them up and slap some paint on them to keep the rust bugs away. What kind of coating would you use so that it all doesn't flake right off the first time you flex them up?
I just want them to be black again :)
NE-RokToy 02-10-2002, 01:32 PM to get them clean bust out the angle grinder and wire wheel, works like a charm. Then wipe them down with a clean cloth and some surface prep. If you want a slick tough surface check out tractor supply places for this stuff called "Slip Plate" I beleive it is, its graphite impregnated paint very durable. But I've only found this stuff in dark gray, if you can't find that try hammerite its also very durable
liveaxle 02-10-2002, 01:42 PM I think that 'slip-plate' is sold at tractor/farm supply stores. If you have one of these places artound you it might be worth a visit.
Twiztid 02-10-2002, 06:47 PM Anyone use POR15 to paint leaf-springs?
If the stuff holds up to it's adds, it should work.
Anyone do it?
Cutter 02-10-2002, 07:01 PM got a buddy who painted EVERYTHING under his CJ with POR, it's been about three years and its still stickin'. Don't know why i didn't think about this earlier:confused:
44Runner 02-10-2002, 07:06 PM I have never heard of POR, where would I find it and how much does it run?
peterfj40 02-10-2002, 08:07 PM i used a wire wheel and grinder on mine to clean them up...just remember to wear something over your nose and mouth when cleaning up that rust..it doesnt feel or taste good when you breath it in,,cant be too good for your lungs either...for mine, i c cleaned them to the bare metal and sprayed some thick ass coats of cheap black paint on them

POR is a BB... it's at pirate4x4.com, and runs $20... :D :D :D
{LAMEJOKE="OFF"}
...Try http://www.por15.com/
Hypoid Drive 02-10-2002, 09:14 PM por 15 is great stuff but is UV sensitive and you need to prep the metal very well in order for it to stay other than that it is as tough as any powdercoat ive seen:roxy:

I used POR on my EB frame, its tough as hell. Its a pain in the ass to get off your skin if you get it on. So wear gloves and a long sleeve shirt. If you want to buy some or check out more info on it go here www.por15.com If you do end up buying some, i would suggest getting the 6 pack of little bottles instead of one big bottle. I bought one of the big ones, opened it, used some, then didnt touch it again for a month, and alot of it dried. I had the container shut as good as it could as well. So next time i bought the small bottles and that worked out much better. Order there sample package they sell for like 15 dollars. I covered almost my entire frame with 1of those little packages.

Actually POR15 tells you not to prep the metal (other than degreaseing).. You want a rough surface for it to stick right.. On bare metal it WILL not stick.. I know this :flipoff2:
And there is a UV protector by the way..
Yeah dont get it on ya, will not come off, only time or a razor , I know this too :flipoff2:
CJ5-Man 02-10-2002, 11:28 PM the slip plate is more of a coating. I painted my springs w/ rustoleum flat black, then coated them w/ the slip plate. Its not as durable as paint and will come off with your fingernail.
44Runner 02-10-2002, 11:35 PM What I am mainly worried about is the paint chipping off when the metal flexs. I don't want to spend time painting these dayum springs and then have all the crap flake off the first time the axle does any real flexing on the trail. Am I being paranoid? Would normal rustoleum do the trick? I just don't want to have to do this more than once, I want to do it the best I can the first time. Keep the ideas coming....
Thanks guys!

Thats only if you go belly-up. It should be O.K. on the frame/springs and such, as long as the rubber side is down.
