No I am not a newby. But I do have a ?? to ask out there IH land. I have a customer that dropped off a Dana 60 rear axle out of a 1974 3/4 ton IH truck that he wants us to use in his buggy we are building. First thing I saw was that there is only 5 bolts holding the axle shafts in place, not as many as the chevy, dodge or ford. How strong is this axle?? Will we be able to come up with disc brakes as easy as the rest?? I know the gears and locker will be no big deal. He said he has the 30 spline axle shafts, I'll brake it down this week. Any info on this axle would be great. Done a bunch of other Dana 60's before, just wanted to know if the IH is about the same.

I am running the IH D60 ff rear in my trail rig. I had it narrowed and had to have custom shafts made. I had Moser build 'em for me. There should be 6 bolts holding it to the hub not 5. I am sure some will argue that it can't possibly be as strong as an 8 bolt axle but I have never had problems. It is indeed 30 spline unless he has something really screwy. I have not explored the rear disc thing as of yet, but was just told that it is no problem and saw plenty of pics showing that it is very possible. I personally wouldn't hesitate to use it. IH is known for building stuff strong and I haven't been able to break mine yet :D
Lemme know if you need or want some more.
